JD 2210 Rear Axle Seal

Is there a trick to getting the rear axle off to replace the seal?

There are two bolts that I can't get to without taking the transmission out!

Looks like remove the rear housing and then remove the snap ring that holds the axle from sliding out.

Look in jdparts for some of the breakdown. Doesn't look like a trick to do.

Thanks for the quick reply! I thought it would be a snap but the top two bolts on the housing (the two above the 4 bolt on the diagram) are entirely inaccessible.

I'm an idiot!

I jacked the tractor up by the transmission, instead of by the frame!

If your an idiot your not the only one.
I can remember trying to very hard to get my rear brake drums off my car with the parking brake engaged

Actually, that wasn't the problem.

Although I still may be an idiot.

I'm back to thinking I have to completely unbolt the transmission from the frame. Does that sound right?

No, it does not "sound" right (but it may "be" right

). But then a pic or two of what you are looking at might help. Is the frame in the way of getting at the two bolts on the top?

Looking at jdparts some more, I'd recommend you get a tech manual CD for your 2210, being that you are willing to dig into the mechanical end of your tractor. That will tell you what you need to disconnect and remove while going after removing the transaxle. Likely you will need to remove the drive shaft, unbolt from the frame, lift the frame and remove the transaxle before removing the housing around the axle.

I ordered the Tech Manual, but in the meantime, I got it off.

I can't believe it was that difficult. When I get the manual, I can check my work!
