Bummer. I feel for ya. It's little consolation for me to say these engines rarely have problems when yours is crapped out.

I think if you get this problem fixed you'll then see how dependable the engine is.

With that said, if the previous operator didn't maintain it well enough to keep the engine from gettin hot, I'd wonder what else he ignored.

They are a tough little tractor that would require abuse to fail.

In case you wondered what one looks like in pieces. Hopefully I can talk to the machine shop and John Deere or the Yanmar dealer tomorrow and figure out where I'm headin.

Looks like the wife will be using the push mower next round. She does the yard and I do the pastures, thought that was a good deal but seems like I spent about as much time working on her tractors as she does mowing. Last year the little lawn mower we had "drove itself" into the pond. Pretty funny actually but it's late so maybe I'll explain later

I know a couple of guys on here had blown their transaxles and were parting out their 2210's due to replacement costs. Wonder if anyone still has a 3TNE74 for sale?

Machine shop said it is cracked at the valve seat all the way through to the gasket surface. There is a place 2 hours from here that can repair it and they thought high end would be $575. Ill try some salvage yards tomorrow and see if I can find a good head or engine then decide which way to go.

Talked to yanmar about getting a replacement engine and they said that they have an agreement with JD not to sell any parts. The diesel shop they recommended talking to about finding an alternative told me JD has better lawyers then them and he was unable to help. JD wants 7500 for a replacement engine.

To me, no matter how good your product is; if you make it too expensive to fix when there is a problem, thats terrible customer service. I may not have bought it new, but I'm 28 and at some point in my life I may be able to afford a new tractor; it wont be green thats for sure.

I hear ya. JD has always suffered a bit with that. I'd find me a new Yanmar dealer and tell him you've got a Yanmar tractor and you need a head. That would at least let you see whether there's enough savings to go that route. You may or may not find that those heads are very expensive. You'd think it would be cheap as small as it is. But when you think about it, takes just as much technical machining to make a little head as it does to make a bigger one. Same with repairing it.

Ive pulled the center piston and it was overheated so bad it almost welded itself to the cylinder wall. Instead of trying to hone that out and live with the small scratches in the sidewall, I decided to go .010 over with it. I would have bought 2 new pistons anyways so decided I might as well do it once and do it right. I dropped the block off at the machine shop today and ordered the pistons since the shop needs them before boring it. Ill order the other parts tomorrow and get a used head coming. Ill have the machine shop check it and the valves out before assembly. Also ordered a manual, heres to hoping its pretty detailed. By time its all said and done Ill probably have 1500 wrapped up in this little engine. Also going to figure out a way to add a water temp gauge, just an idiot light is such a stupid idea, who stares at the dash when they are mowing (not my wife, and not the person before her thats for sure)

Yeah, I agree about the temp gauge. On my old 455 it would turn the deck off if it got hot, which I thought was a great idea. My wife called me one day and said the deck turned off. I asked if the "hot" light was on?? She had no idea. I said leave it sit and I'll check it when I get home. The screen and radiator were plugged with dandelion fuzz. If it hadn't stalled the deck she would have burned it up.

Just curious,

I just wanted other's input on the idea of "shut it off immediately" or "let it idle and cool off with the engine running" schools of thought. The only time my JD 2305 get hot to the point of getting the engine light on is when I hog my field in the heat of summer and the front grille gets loaded with chaff. Personally, my approach is to turn it off immediately and let it cool by radiant cooling. I do understand the concept of heat soaking, but my thought was that since the parts are not moving, any excess heat would have little effect on the engine. I have about 350 hours on my machine and the engine still works just fine, but I am still curious about the perspective of others who have more experience than me.

Thanks,

SI2305

Just saw your link labrat, thanks for taking the time to look that up. Fortunately I'm the one that bought that, saved me about 300 bucks over a salvage yard.

Not real sure on the shutting off after over heating, my approach is to add a coolant temp gauge and take it back and blow it off before it gets too hot. Even if you look at the light every 5 or so min, it still running over temp for at least a few min. There's a good write up on here from a couple guys doing them, looks pretty simple
