JD 2240
How do I determine if the loader valve on my old 145 loader is open or closed center? My 2240 is a 1980 model, and I assume it's a closed center tractor, but there's no apparent plug or sleeve in a port I can see on the valve while it's still mounted. I have a Prince replacement coming but haven't bought a closed center plug yet until I determine which it is.

Closed-center hydraulics became available in on the 2040 in 1978 at serial number 266750.[/QUOTE]

You must have not read my other post #11 in your other post and the PM I sent.

Show a picture of your tractor valve, all sides.

If the loader came off of a JD tractor, odds are it is a closed center valve. Where did you buy it from? If it was installed w/ the tractor (package), odds are it is, unless it was replaced and the person who did it didn't have a clue.

Well, there is a cheap quick way. A little gross in one version. If the loader valve is not hooked up, find the supply and return lines. If they have a quick disconnect, remove them. Take your air compressor and put the blow valve tool chuck (forgot the name) and put it into one line. TURN YOUR AIR PRESSURE DOWN to like 5psi!!!! Take a rag, cover the hose end where you put the air chuck, squeeze. If air blows out of the other hydraulic hose, you have an open center valve. If air does not and comes back out where you are trying to blow, you have a closed center valve. The other method, not using a compressor, is to blow on it with your mouth....like I said, one was gross.

A lot of the early valves were made closed center. Not a open center valve assembly that you could "modify" to be closed center....not all. But once they found it was cheaper (usually) to make a generic valve (usually open center), the kit's were available to make them closed. Less valves to have around (as open center hydraulics are more common then closed in tractors).

All 2240's were closed-center hyd's. Early model 2040's were open-center. Not all 145 loader valves were the convertible type valves

I bought the loader and added it myself. I assume (we know what that does) that I got lucky and got a closed center valve. The shipping tracking shows the new valve will arrive tomorrow, so I'll tear the old one out tomorrow, but it sounds like I need to order the plug. If I use a power beyond sleeve and plug it, could I series another valve later as long as it was closed center? Thanks for the replies! Mike

I meant to add that I've used the loader for years, but the old valve is shot. I changed over to Bobcat-style quik-tach this year. I really like vintage green but the quik-tach opens up a whole new world.

Or you could just T the supply line so you don't have to plumb in series. Diddo w/ the return line. A JD has a 2000psi min....so T-ing in the supply won't affect much. I take it you only have two valves on the original valve, up/down and bucket curl/uncurl.

Was the loader from a private sale (farmer etc) or dealer? You might be able to contact them and ask was it was off of. But, if it came w/ the JD side frame rails that bolt to the side of the bellhousing/engine, odds are it was off of a JD to begin with. Also, are you running the return line to the oil filter housing? Just wondering.

I have a 168 JD loader I want to mount to 3020. It has no control valves, but I have a closed center valve joystick I have I'm going to use. It has a third electric valve to use a thumb or other accessory....

Best answers you can hope for.

You don't series CC valves.

All the CC valves are in parrallel.

All the IN ports connect to the same supply line.

Yes, as long as the valve is a closed center, it will work.

Yes, it does. That old 168 JD loader, the first thing I did (I just got it), is I bought an adapter off the internet. It puts the universal Bobcat-style quik-tach on my old JD. No more pounding pins when I want to change implements on the loader.
