JD 1070 intermittent starting problem: Starts then dies.

My JD 1070 will generally start up OK and sometimes stays running good. Intermittently it will start and then 'die' after a few seconds and frequently not start or run normally unless left off for several hours. Have replaced the fuel filter/water separator beneath the gas tank but no improvement.
Any clues or guidance to cause and repair much appreciated.

There is another filter up front in the engine compartment on the right lower side (looking forward). I believe the front filter is a water separator. You might want /need a band type wrench to remove the filer cap. Turn off the rear filter shutoff valve before you check this one.
