Folks,

I'm new to tractors. I recently bought a 1988 JD1050
with 800 hours on the clock. She runs really well and
I am quite happy. I have a question regarding the
3 cylinder turbo yanmar diesel motor. When I start it
cold it clatters quite loudly. The noise dissapears when
she's warm. I think it's piston slap. Do any of you hear
anything that sounds like piston slap when your JD's are
cold? She runs real well. No problems whatsoever. No
leaks, no exhaust smoke (other than normal black smoke
when the turbo is spoiling up after a long idle). What is
the best way to start the motor on cold days. Should I leave
it idle till the slap goes a way, or should I bring the rpms
up just slightly above idle. Thanks for your help.

Dave, I don't know you so I don't know how much experience you've had with different kinds of engines, so you could be right, but my first thought is simply that it sounds normal for a diesel engine.

Every diesel I've been around clatters some when cold. I let my 1050 at the start throttle position for a minute or two. I usually have somthing to do or go get during this time. I have noticed no ill effects.

My 950 clatters at a very low idle speed. Above 900 rpm or so it quietens down considerably. My manual says not to let it idle for "extended periods" below 1000 rpm so I rarely go below that.

As the others stated, diesels 'chatter'. Yanmars even more so.. ( especially the 2 cyl models .- In fact.. the first time a person hears a 2 cyl yanmar.. the usual expression is: Is that about to throw a rod? ). But anyway.. even the 3cyls models chatter quite a bit. And as engines go.. the less cylinders.. the less 'smooth' the sound. 2 cyl is worse than 3, 3 is worse than 4, etc. This sound is exagerated even more at low rpms.. at higher rpms, the sound evens and smooths out.
FWIW: the chatter of a yanmar is refered to as the 'yammer hammer'. This is the same type of reference as a 'Johnny popper' refering to the antique 2cyl JD's .. etc. ( though gas engine... etc ).

Not saying you don't have a problem..
