It\'s the Final Countdown!

First, I would like to thank everyone on this site for their valuable opinions, various expertises, and dealer experiences on compact tractors. My search has been narrowed down to the Massey 1533 and the Mahindra 3510 both with QA loaders. I will be buying either one this week so this is your last chance to chime in and help my decision process.

My wife and I had a very nice conversation last night, comparing all the specs, standard equipment, and price. She said they were the 'ones' and for me to decide. With hay bales approaching the 900-1200lbs range, this alone eliminated quite a few tractors!

The final decision has to be yours. Sorry we really can't help but will re-emphasise that dealer has a lot to do with it. Massey is a well known product and has been around for years. Mahindra is coming on very strong and will be around for years. I would really take a second look at your dealers and get a feel for which one you think will give you the best service after the sale. Also which one fits your butt the best. Also one thing that would concern me on the Mahindra is how long has your dealer had this line and how long will he have it in the future. Does this dealer also handle other lines and how strong is he. Does re-sale come into your decision or is this tractor a life long purchase? So lot's of questions but both rigs will do the job for you. Get the one you like the best and make sure of the dealer.

( Wasn't gone testing it but 15 minutes before I experienced one of the worst sides of tractoring. Couldn't do anything except put it all up and call it a day... don't want anymore for today. I got a rabbits nest and it broke my heart. )
I'm just a little concerned that for bales of that size, these tractors may be a tad small. I don't bale, but I've heard and read a lot of people say you need to start at 40 HP for small square bales. The big round bales need much more HP.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find specific info on the 1533 on Massey's crappy website. Just the 1500 series which states they are 23 - 52 HP. I won't assume it's 33, but that would be the thought.
Have you tried moving hay bales with these tractors? If not, do it before you decide.
Loader joystick seems to be an option on the Massey, I think the valve and joystick are included on Mahindra. Check it out, could cost you more on the Massey.
Also, find out which one has the larger alternator in case you want to hook up a bunch more lighting. Many tractors only come with small amp alternators that won't run a lot more than standard equipment.

Bob, 1000 lb bales will be tougher to handle with the lighter weight of the Massey, which weighs in at 2844 lbs. The Mahindra is at 3881 lbs., making it significantly heavier. That is a big factor for me when I drove the Mahindra 4110 and the MF 1540. 1,000 lbs on the end of a loader puts a lot of leverage on a tractor, and could make one that weighs less than 3,000 lbs tippy.

KiotiJohn, Bob is going to move round bales, not bale hay. When moving the round bales, even the smaller ones like the 800-1000# variety, tractor weight is important.

I don't recall mentioning anything in my post about HIM baling hay.
I was talking about moving small square bales or large round ones. The round ones weigh a lot more, right?
I did say that I don't bale hay, meaning I'm not sure that I know all I should about what I said. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I do see what you mean though. Weight AND HP was what I had in my mind, but it didn't come through on here.
Where did you find the weight for the Massey? All I could find was generic info about the 1500 series, not the 1533 in particular. Thanks, John

Since the 4110 has a 4 cyl engine, how is your fuel consumption? I do have a killer price on one and may opt for it instead. More hp/PTO hp and it already has the QA bucket. Thanks for the pointers on the weight issue. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't worry about the joystick on the Massey, it is an option. It comes std with a loader mounted stick. The optional stick is one like is found on the Kiotis. 1533 does stand for 33hp and it has 26PTO hp. Keith is right as it is significantly lighter than both Mahindras. I'm trying to get the right tractor for future projects and this includes the moving of round bales. I could get by with a lighter tractor now (just moving and spreading dirt) and will want the brute weight later. With the high NW Florida pricing on the Massey /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, Alabama (Massey and Mahindra) will get my money.

Murph, thanks for once again pointing out the dealership relationship. The Massey dealer has been in business for some time and the Mahindra dealer has the most knowledgable tractor guy in the area. He wouldn't have taken on Mahindra if there was something bad about them. He is also a former Massey factory guy. Both are in business for the long term.

Bob, I'm still in the shopping stage. I think I have narrowed my choices down the the HN TC40A, the Kubota L3830 or 4400 and the Mahindra 4110. I'm really leaning toward the Mahindra because of the weight issue. I plan to move round bales with it, and asked the dealer how it handled them. He proceeded to tell me the names of a number of customers who purchased the 4110 just for feeding round bales to their stock.

I drove the Massey, and came away very unimpressed with it. Of all the CUTs I have tried out it was the lightest of them all.

KiotiJohn, my Massey info comes straight off their brochure. Not only is the Massey more than a 1000 lbs lighter, but it is also a foot and a half shorter, which impacts stability as well. Length is a big asset when using the loader for the round bales, the longer the tractor the more likely it is to keep the back end on the ground. It is also a factor when pulling. Longer tractors are less likely to rare up on you,

Glad to hear it! Happy for ya. Now I've looked at Mahindra a good bit, and I actually fell in love with the 10 series. At the dealer I was visiting, Outback, up here in Cumming, GA, they post prices right on the tractors. Were only asking $1,000 more for the 4110 over the 3510. So I thought then that it was really not worth considering the 3510. For just a little more you get one heck of a tractor. And those FAT R4's they put on the 4110 really do make it look awesome. So how long will you have this tractor? That's the way I look at things. I buy for keeps, so I think, 10 plus years, little extra money for the 41, negligible.

I second murph. If your dealer is a good guy, go with HIM. Service makes the product.
