It\'s official - our property is now a farm!!
We received what appeared to be a survey from the Maryland Department of Agriculture during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Since it was something from the State, we gave it a cursory look and thought it was a survey about what kind of nutrients we use for our gardening. Yeah, yeah... get to it later....
My wife was looking at our pile of mail and read it a little better.... Honey, you better read this and see what you think.
What.... they consider us a farm!!!! 3.01 acres and we're a farm.
Closer examination shows that since we earn more than $2,500 in income from our "farm", we have to work with the State to develop a Nutrition Management Plan. Yes, you eyes aren't deceiving you (like mine were!!!). A Nutrition Management Plan!!
So, our property gets classified with large crop production, chicken operations, pig farms, and every other agricultural business in the People's Republic of Maryland!!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
I'm working from home so that I could chase the issue. Just in case I needed some information on our property. Talked to the district office and they were very helpful. Almost apologetic!! Seems like a lot of people are getting blindsided by the issue.
So, now we have to work with our County Extention Agent - called a consultant by the state, to develop our plan. Sigh....
Why is this being done!! To protect the Cheasapeake Bay. Got to make sure that we don't put bad things into it. Let me see if I understand this correctly. We have less agriculture now than before but there is a bigger concern with less agriculture. Makes perfect sense to me!! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
Don't get me wrong, I believe there are a few problems, but the first people to get blamed are the farmers. Why don't they look at all of the garbage being used by the average homeowner. I bet that there is more abuse by them than the farmer.
