It's Cold !

jeez Joe.. take it easy up there, That is the major danger zone as far as I know. What in the world can you do at -39F?.. We would all be dead here if it was that cold. Our houses and heating systems are just not made for that. Take care buddy.

Ditto, along with the cars n trucks and light bulb and well everything would quit.

We don't take this kind of cold lightly. Dress properly, keep enough fuel in the vehicles to keep warm if we end up in the ditch, and do chores (like feeding animals) very quickly to reduce exposure time. But mostly, we stay indoors, build a fire and eat starchy, fatty, high-caloric food for fuel. This ain't no time for salads!

P.S. Pass the butter.

Just came in from evening chores, and the thermometer in my barn said -5F. When I was giving my livestock water I got my waterproof gloves wet, and they froze so solid that I had to go in and put on another pair, because I couldn't pick up anything with frozen gloves.

If your gloves got wet and froze . How do you keep the livestock water from freezing as soon as you water them ??

Our rubber water trough is outside. I use two 500 watt submersible heaters in the tank. Hasn't froze yet, even in severe sub-zero temps. Everyone who has livestock up north uses heated water troughs of some sort.

My turn at this. I thought I was all set for this storm. Anti gel in the tank, block heater plugged in, plow mounted, good to go.... NAAHH! Went out to plow off the first three inches. Click ....then churn churn and start but only ran long enough to empty the line from the fuel filter to the injector pump then quit. Not again! I thought I was through this gelled fuel crap. Guess not. The Battery doesn't seem up to it at -8F must be a battery for all the seasons they get in India. Bring up the pickup truck. need two sets of jumper cables to reach. One set has one lead almost broke off. Placed work light under tank to warm fuel outlet. :worked once before. No luck. Attached battery trickle charger to battery. went to play darts with friends. Bought beer for darts and steak at MAP store. Store owner trying to start his tractor. Lost at darts, nothing new here. Fixed jumper cable in dart room and borrowed two plastic tarps from friends. Hooked up MR. Heat propane heater on 20 lb bottle and placed pointed towards oil pan. Enclosed tractor as best as could be with tarps. Went to change fuel filter, The one they sold me is an inch too long, had to dump out the old one fill half full of diesel 911 then prime it up. Fuel finally coming from tank to filter after moving Mr. heat to rear end. Still no crank?? Jumper cable fell off truck battery when not looking. -8F this is getting old and the snow is getting deep. One last try.... Hurrah all is good. plowed out and tractor is parked very close to house, plugged in and wrapped in tarps for less hassle tomorrow.
Got to add : When I got back to the house I was served home made chicken soup and corn bread piping hot and waited on like a conquering hero. Priceless!

Two sets of filters and one battery so far, and it's never close to the shop.

Don't know how you guys in the minus F numbers do it!!! :confused3: We hit single digits (8degF) for the first time in years early last month. Actually I think it was close to the lowest ever recorded here. It's a balmy 45degF now.

At least we don't have much snow, yet, only about 4 inches and it's been snowing lightly all day.

Lol, I know the feeling..I was out at our barn taking care of our animals earlier this evening, and it was -13F with the windchill, and I splashed water from a trough on my cold weather suit( generic but warm Carhart knockoff) and it froze instantly in hard drops all over, and I had alot of trouble getting my boots off because the laces were frozen solid. It is really gusting out now, ands its close to -20F. I can't wait to snow blow the entire farm out in the morning! Lol

On a side note, we had extreme cold weather boots in the military, even though I went to the @$&# sandbox all the time, and they were rated to something like -45F. I would highly recommend them!

11 degrees here right now, supposed to get down to 7 in the early morning. Overall, it's been a pretty mild winter, other than this and couple of other real cold spells. Since most of my service time was in much warmer climates, I don't like the cold, but get by with insulated coveralls and gloves, but for me anytime the temperature is below legal drinking age, it's darned cold!

-16f here right now... Monday is predicted to be a HIGH of -12!

This is an unusually cold winter so far. I can't remember a colder one, except maybe when I was a kid and less conscientious of the temperature.
