Some of the long standing TBN members are so fed up that they are saying their good-byes and leaving the TBN site as a result of trolls.

This notion has been repeated quite a few times in the past several weeks. I do not think it accurately reflects the experience of TBN members, especially "long term" TBNers.

There are about 1,500 "long term" members, meaning they have posted more than a couple of thousand posts, and/or have been around more than two years. Maybe 15 of them have "disappeared", meaning they have not posted within the past 90 days. This happens.

However, there are many, many reasons they might not be posting. One of the top 2 or 3 posters --- "Thomas" (I think he is #2, behind Bird), just re-appeared a couple of weeks ago, after being "gone" for almost a year. He was "off riding my Harley," he said.

It is unreasonable to think that with 20,000 members ALL of them will join and stay active at all times forever. It just isn't how this works.

One of our top members, and a moderator, drifted away about a year ago. But he has two businesses, three daughters, etc etc. He did PM Muhammad about hios siutation, but it is not necessary to chase after every person to ask them why they aren't, or worse, to demand that they resume making posts. That would almost be like a harrassment of their privacy.

If "long term members are leaving" they are doing so without a single word of complaint to Muhammad. Muhammad is the Final Authority, if anyone thinks they are going to go a' trolling. Many have tried over the 700,000+ total posts. None have survived Muhammad. Besides, our moderators are the best on the 'Net, and literally watch 24X7. I can assure you that not a single situation arises that is not discussed quickly, and watched to calm down volitile situations.

Actually, we have added something like a quarter of a million NEW posts ion just the past six months or so. So in our view, it is incorrect to present the idea that TBN is floundering and people are running away in droves. That simply isn't true.

The issues of difference of opinion have been around from day #1. We have always dealt with true troublemakers in a fair, but definitive manner. We hope to continue on to the one million posts mark fairly soon, and then on out into a long future -- as long as people like tractors. We expect this TBN forum will go on for quite a good while yet. Enjoy the ride.

Thank you for the numbers Hakim!

I do have to wonder if the shear volume of members posting recently [I've only been here 6 months] makes the negatives seem more frequent even though the percentage may be the same or even down.

At any rate, it isn't the people just disappearing, leaving to take care of things, or passing through that [far as my feable newbie mind can tell] prompted this thread, so much as the unusual% of the "very regular" members who have recently needed a break due to bad experiences with other members: new and old. This is no doubt Muhammad's house we are guests in; yet the people in question seemed to be part of the atmosphere. Forgive me for a perhaps antiquated example, but I'd compare it to "Cliff" and "Norm" leaving "Cheers". Same place, but missing a couple regulars.

Anyway, as far as trolls, I've only seen one foul mouth joker, who dissappered quite rapidly due to you and the other moderators; perhaps Muhammad himself. And another with a legitamate question who became foul upon any reasoning contrary to his...same thing: quick "disposal". To you guys sorting through the "trolls", I can only say keep up the good work! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Far as "Cliff, Norm, and the gang", perhaps you're right, that's between them and Muhammad, but I hope too many don't leave; I know I'll miss them. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That make any sense, or just babble? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Oh and thanks for the ride! Both to the guys in the background taking care of bits&bytes&trolls, and to those here before me that set this great atmoshere!

Thanks, Hakim. I agree 100%. I only posted the information about trolls because a question was asked and I knew one possible answer. I have seen disruptive posts recently; however I do not believe they were deliberate. I believe they are the result of differing ideas of what "help" is.

The complaint I have heard most frequently, recently, is the number of people who give the same response to every request for a recommendation for a tractor, "You should buy the Noxious 45XKE." No explanation, no consideration of the question originally asked. Question: "What is the best used tractor?" Answer: "You should buy The Noxious 45XKE." Question: What is the best teensy tiny tractor? Answer: "You should buy the Noxious 45XKE". Question: "What is the best humongous tractor? Answer: "You should buy..." You get the idea.

Now, these fellas are not doing this to be deliberately disruptive, so they don't meet the defintion of classic troll. But, the constant, mindless repeating IS annoying, and annoying can be disruptive.

However, As soon as you respond or try to correct these guys, you are also contributing to the disruption, and perhaps even making it worse. This is the sort of thing I have seen experienced users do -- get exasperated and try to correct the situation, but really only make it worse. Then, they get so frustrated, they quit -- or threaten to. Many of us know at least one member who IS in correspondence with Muhammad and theatening to quit.

As for me, I wasn't even aware of the problems until a few members started pointing them out, which is also a little disruptive. I'm not going anywhere, which may bring some dismay to those who think I'm too long winded in my posts, which in itself can be annoying. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I work on it -- I once made a one-word post, and I frequently average it into all the others. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hakim
Very well said, IMO. I don't worry or fret about members who don't have the interest and/or the time to be on all the time.

I was a bit upset by a post made in the last 12 hours that seemed to 'fault' both the posters who, to this member, appeared to act like 'experts' as well as to the 'newbies' who were asking innocent, but necessary questions for information. I shook it off and 'went on' figuring this member got something off his chest and others can take it or leave it, as they wish.

Also, I was in MI this past weekend (attending a gathering of about 100 forum members from another forum and had an absolutely fantastic time with them, and had never met a one of them face-to-face) and learned that a 'troll' was a Michigander from below (southof) THE bridge, separating them from the 'Yoopers' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Edit: I must add here that I just looked and noticed that Johnday is in MI, and that remark was not intended in any way to be directed at him. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

johnday,
I'm not leaving, I'm here almost every night. And I take time to read "almost" every post But I limit my posts to those that I won't get "flaming replies" from.
I do however respond to PM's from members who would like an educated answer.

Jerry; Good to hear that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifI'm sure the people you've straightened out appreciate it. Maybe if they'd look at others bios, they'd find that some of us really do know what we're talking about. Keep the faith Jerry. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can't really add that much to what Hakim has said already. He always is able to put things in the proper perspective, and in a very easy way to understand.

I will add that I, and the other moderators as well, have received a number of PM's from these long term members everyone has been talking about. And I believe that in every PM that I received, the member stated that he was fed up and was leaving for awhile.

BUT, also in every case, the member indicated that he would continue to monitor (watch from the sidelines if you will) TBN to see how things go.

In other words, they're taking a hiatus or a leave of absence. They're doing this to take a break and clear their heads. And I would venture to say that because they are veteran members, they completey understand that if they truly were going to quit, they would communicate that with Muhammad directly.

Yeah, we've had some problems lately. But you know what? We've had 'em before and we'll have 'em again. I'm not trivializing the problems that we've had, because I know that some members have probably been hurt by some of this stuff, and I really feel badly about that. But with as many people involved in this site as we have had, overall we really can't say that we have huge problems. With this many people, there's just no way we can avoid some problems.

There have been some changes in the guidelines that should help things. And there will, in all likelihood, be some more coming along in the future. This is not only because of the problems that have been discussed, but because of the growth that has been experienced. And changes are a good thing, regardless of how they come about. It means that we're an active, living, growing community that deals with problems in a positive manner that ultimately is to every members benefit.

Im very sorry guys, you aint got rid of me yet. The only way you could get me to leave here is if you allowed John to show a picture of whats under his kilt /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It all started last tuesday. I got home from a day out and was shocked to find the house in charred ruins. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Obvoiusly I was devistated, everything was gone, computer, cat, TV, beer and Mrs (well I wasnt too upset about the cat and the Mrs, one hissed and scratched alot and left hairs everywhere and the other ate smelly food from tins and dragged dead animals in /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)
This would explain my absence from TBN the past few days. Now I have got a small caravan on the site and have bought a new computer so I am back on line.

As im sure many of you had guessed im yet to say a truthful word and my holiday was lovely. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
