It Doesn\'t Pay to Borrow Your Neighbors Implements

I should say attempt to borrow. I thought I could get along without a disc this year, wrong! My neighbor said I could use his 10 footer, raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder and on tires. It's been sitting out in his buffalo farm pasture for a long time so I drove down this morning to see what I would need to get it the two miles to my place. It was rusted, for sure, but the cylinder and tires looked good but I needed hitch pins to connect it to my drawbar. I drove over to the local JD dealer, bought two pins, drove my tractor the two miles back to the buffalo farm. I cleaned up the connections as they were fairly well corroded, I then noticed one of the hoses was torn but the inner core looked intact so I hooked them up to the remotes on the 45, hooked up the hitch to my drawbar and hopped in the tractor. I raised the disc and that put pressure on the tires and they were both flat. I was not a happy camper, unhooked everything, drove home and am now trying to figure out a way I can afford a 3 pt disc. I have never liked implements with tires and this just reinforces my thinking. I am not sure if the 45 would have been able to pull that 10 foot disc either.

Sounds like you need a find a different neighbor to borrow from.

We have lots of weekend warriors around our farm. They often ask to borrow implements, like post hole diggers, scraper blades, rakes, mowers, plows, etc.

This usually entails effort on our part but we try to accomodate. When they return the plow, we show how to wash it off and "paint' grease on it. With the post hole digger, we had to ask a neighbor to replace the bent blade. "oh, that's why it stopped working right!" /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
With the scraper blades we have had to ask them to haul it to a weld shop for several welds...
You get the idea. Several of our neighbors borrow equipment but they know the rules. If you break it, fix it and if return it the way your found it or better.

I really hate to borrow anything for that reason and very seldom ever do but he insisted that I take the disc and use it. Even told me to keep it here and if he needed it he would get the thing. I'm thinking he was so generous because he wanted to hunt turkey here. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A bailment is created when you ,"borrow" something. Legally it has to be returned in the same shape you got it in-if not better. For this reason the company I worked for had a rule that you were never ever to run another companies equipment. The boss would fire you no questions asked. Something about having to replace a forklift engine.
