It's a scam for sure!! Now they are getting even craftier. Evidently due to the slight delay in banking drafts the bank the check is written on actually honors the check but then there are no funds when to transfer. You think the check has cleared and then it turns out the funds approval should never have happened. I get literally hundreds of these a year from my cattle and horse operation.

Forget it. THIS IS A SCAM. Run from it like you've never run from anything else. If he wants the tractor have him send you a cashier''s check for $8,500 plus freight costs, wait until you determine if that cashier's check is indeed good, and then send him the tractor. Under no conditions should you send him any balance up front. What's the purpose in this if not to rip you off at least $2,500?

SCAM. No question. You're "gut" stopped you from making a big mistake. Don't even THINK about waiting for the check to clear or trying to "make it work." It's a scam - pure and simple.

Here's the State Department's advise regarding Nigeria.

More info on Nigeria from the State Department.

Had a friend who is a "dreamer" and almost flew to Europe to finish one of these bogus transactions (he had his airline ticket in hand.) (Originated in Nigeria, but final "transaction" was going to take place in Denmark.) Kept trying to convince him it was "too good to be true" but he kept with the "maybe, but maybe not" and couldn't get the $ signs out of his head. Finally I took one of the sentences of the email he received and did a search on the web - came back with evidence that it was a "standard" scam and he was setting himself up for a kidnaping! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

He canceled his ticket... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Basically, I simply don't conduct transactions with overseas individuals - regardless of country. Too much risk - and not just to my checkbook. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif If you choose to, that’s your business, but I believe it is a dubious practice at best.

Firefighter,
I'll join the choir, it's a scam. If you're going to get involved, require them to use wire transfer to pay you instead of a check and let them make the shipping arrangments including payment, not an unreasonable request.

Personally I wouldn't get involved with them, I don't care how clever we think we are, an honest man can't out-con a con man

Boy this is so obvious and simple that I am dissapointed in the intellegnce of my fellow humans that fall for this.
Its real simple: If you are selling something - money goes into not out of your pocket!

Pure scam. Get Mahammad the headers from the emails you've gotten and see if he can do anything.

These are way more common than I would have ever thought - I wonder why they continue (although the only reason I can think of is because some people fall for 'em).

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the input. I was concerned because I have never sold anything over the net, so I was unaware of the proper channels of money exchange. I did check with the Better Buisness Burea prior to my dealings, which assured me that this was a scam, after that I checked with you guys thank you. The check was sent and we contacted the bank in which it was from and they confirmed scam. My father is a business man, so we were always cautious, we had no /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif intentions of turning over the tractor or the money. I was very surprised that a cashiers check could be duplicated so easily, I build houses for a living, so much for honest people. THANKS TRACTORBYNET FORUM your information was on the money HA HA /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Fo about 20 years I have sold used medical equipment overseas. I have always used a stateside brokerage company to handle the details. They are well worth their money (usually a precentage) Individual transactions are almost always trouble. There are a myraid of govermental regs both US and overseas that can be costly. Our transations have always been done via wire transfer or bank letter of credit from a US bank. Shipping has always been the responsability of the buyer. If they want the gear let them worry how to get it from the customs yard US to Lagos or wherever. I don't know if this applies to tractors but it has always applied to CT scanners.

I dont think this is a scam for the reason of the small amount of profit the guy would make.

Jai,
No scam ? Small amount of profit ? I do not understand your logic here Jai. Also why no profile on you. Just color me suspicious/cautious.

YOU DON'T THINK THIS IS A SCAM????
Firefighter told us he contacted the bank and it was a counterfiet! WHat the heck?
Did you miss that or WHAT????

Why would anyone on a different continent want to pay to ship a used tractor to them. For crying out loud.
I wouldn't want to drive to mid-Ohio for a used tractor. We have them here and they have them there.

Yes, I believe that there is no doubt this is a scam.

But I don't think that this statement is the proof. The (thriving) grey market tractor industry does exactly this, buying used tractors and shipping them to a different continent. There is enough profit to support multiple middlemen.

Does this mean that this particular transaction makes sense? No.

I knew a guy who was building a retirement home on Fiji- nice low cost of living in the tropics. Bought everything- building materials, hardware, fixtures- here in the States in the high priced San Francisco bay area, packed it into cargo containers, and had it shipped to Fiji. Cheaper that way, even for cement tile backer board! It is amazing how expensive prices can be in other countries, regardless of the income level.

I frequent a dune buggy discussion board also. Some of the guys there have gotten similar requests for their dune buggys. Everyone there also believes it to be a scam.

Anyone catch the NBC news the other night? They did a story on this exact scam - purchase of a used big ticket item (cars in this instance), cashier's check for payment that is over the asking price, request for the difference to be wired back to them in NIGERIA, etc. etc....

Sound familiar anyone? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I saw the same show. I think there is a gullibility factor that is added in to all of these scams. The too good to be true syndrome.
