...how would your double spike roller do if the ground were already flat...

Important is that I would NOT have those front shanks touch the ground. They would cut grooves I don't want and rip up sod. Best if I just scuff the ground a little with just the spikes....
NOW I'm on the same page with you, and also understand what you think this can do... got-ya...

Those rollers would NOT do what you want. I have a single roller behind mine... even if I had three of them, they still would not scuff up a darn thing. The rollers are back there to break larger clods of dirt into smaller ones (more rollers, the smaller the clods but they do not "scuff" up anything!!!

The "cut grooves" is what a pulverizer is ALL about (and they dig in 1.5 inches). Also, yes they would rip up the sod.

THIS might be what you would need to use but I don't know much about them:

I have looked at the pine rake but it isn't tough enough. Maybe if I built one using tedder tines it would be OK but then I would have scraped up thatch to deal with. Too labor intensive.

I have used these and they work BUT plug up with thatch almost immediately and are difficult to clear. A pull-type is hard to handle and a 3 pt hitch model is too long for the trailer for transport so no-go.

What do you think about the Woods model that has dual spike rollers followed by a seeder, then a spiked roller and then a rear packer? The first spiked roller is in two pieces and can be individually angled, like a disc harrow, to increase the aggressiveness and cutting action. This is a more expensive option but what do you think? This model shown has two seed boxes while I would only need the one box version.

You can also get them with double gangs of discs up front followed by a seed drop, a spiked roller in the middle and then packer wheels in back. They are more aggressive but it could work if the angle was not too severe. The second video shows the disc model and discs would work ok if I took it easy. More aggressive but it seems the angled spike gangs would work.

Check with Franklin Equipment, there at Rt. 33 & Hamilton Rd. You can rent a slit seeder there for $300 per day. 48" Overseeder - Franklin Equipment If you're thinking of doing this in Sept., the usually run a holiday special on rental equipment, 3 days, for the price of one. They also have a used, I'm assuming rental unit for sale, for $3950, which makes the $300 per day seem like a bargain.

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going with the Woods model. They aren't cheap but will do the job.

The implement you reference below is an alfalfa splitter that splits the crown of the plant and then you have two plants where there once was one. As you suggest, I'm very tempted to try one for grass seed and think it would work.

This one will rough (cut slits) in the ground then firms up with a packer: $1200

Spiked drag harrow or a tandem disc harrow with all the set taken out. Seed then run a smooth cultipacker.
