50 years ago the Apollo 11 burned 203,400 gallons of kerosene and 318,000 gallons of liquid oxygen to push the 6 million pound rocket the first 38 miles to the moon.

Ya, chemical rocket engines do burn lots. The original engineers thought they'd build a single stage spacecraft to go up and return from the moon..
