Kubota BX 25
Hi all, I've been lurking for a while but never got around to registering. There's been a few times lately where I've wanted to respond to a post but remembered that I didn't have a membership, so I figured I should fix that. I've been hanging out on another forum but this one has been just as useful so I figured I should sign up. I wanted my first post to be something helpful so I'm bringing some information over that I posted there as I think it may be useful to some members here.

Last year I bought a Kubota BX25 after much deliberation (and negotiation with my accountant *cough* wife *cough*). My one real point of concern was the HST fan since I live in an area littered with mesquite twigs, so I knew a skid plate was in order. I went with the BXpanded because it looked simple and I don't use the mid-PTO anyway so there was no worry about blocking that off. I hadn't seen a good tutorial on the installation process so I decided to make one  Hope you all enjoy and thanks for being so helpful.

****************

Alright here we go, I got my skid plate from Bxpanded today and was able to install it in about 20 minutes (including time to snap pictures). I probably could've gotten it done quicker but I'm still learning my tractor and since I don't have a mower deck there were two things I had to figure out right quick: the cutting height adjuster and the mower deck lever. Here's a pic for anyone else who never worries about these things, the green arrow points to the height adjustment and the blue arrow is the lever that controls the arms:

I found out that without a lot of weight on the arms they don't go down easy, so I held the lever and just pushed them down.

So, from the factory I think the design is ok really. The HST fan is pretty well tucked up in there but there is still a chance that a stick/root/fishing pole may find it's way up and strip off all the plastic fan blades. While the risk can be mitigated by being careful of where you are, I am of the mindset that I'll probably try to do things I shouldn't do and will keep that up until something breaks. I took a look under the tractor and snapped a pic of the vulnerabilities:

The green arrow points to the HST fan. The red is the tranny filter. The blue is the mid-mount PTO. All of which are somewhat vulnerable. Rather than face a $250 insurance deductible along with downtime, I decided a sub-$200 investment was worth while. This is what was in the box:

skid01.jpg

A skid plate of 1/8" steel and a pair of bolts. Looks easy enough eh?

Now on to the install. First step, open beer and add fuel to body.

Step 2, recycle the shipping box as a gravel mat:

skid09.jpg

Step 3, install the bolts to the frame. There are two holes in the frame about 16" in front of the mower mount spring pins (when the mower arms are up). The bolts just go right in, but you might have to finangle your mower arms a bit to make room to get them in. Just move the arms up or down as needed and it should work out. There are spacers on the bolts so make sure they are installed the right way, the instructions are simple to follow but if a picture helps, the green arrow is towards the middle of the tractor while the blue arrow points outward:

skid03.jpg

Step 4, orient the skid plate so the little arms are towards the bolts and slide it up onto the spacers. You might need to wiggle it a bit but again, easy peasy:

skid04.jpg

If your skid plate looks like this right now then you're doing alright so far:

skid05.jpg

Step 5, lift the back of the skid plate and insert the mower mount pins into the holes in the "ears" of the skid plate:

skid06.jpg

Again, here's a status check. If it looks like this you're almost done:

skid07.jpg

Step 6, start the tractor and slowly raise the mower lift arms. Ensure you peek under while lifting to make sure you don't have any issues with stuff in the way. I had no issues with clearance on mine but better to be cautious. Once the plate is lifted, you'll be pretty well covered:

Step 7, open beer and enjoy

Overall I am a lot more comfortable taking this into my rocky-desert back yard with the added bit of protection. Even if it's still possible for something to attack my tranny, the peace of mind for the price is worth while. The plate itself feels stout enough for all but the most hardcore, and if you're jumping stumps with your tractor then you might have problems only the guys in white coats can fix. So I think it's a good deal and will work well, and the fact that they threw in a free ground mat was great!

Thanks for the great 1st post I am just about to order one for my 2360 and this has made up my mind to get it done. I am to late to save my hst fan a small stick flew up last week while cutting underbrush and cleaned every blade off the hub :-(. My dealer said it could wait a few weeks to be replaced as it is cold enough to keep the hst cool.

The plate went onto my 2360 just like the pictures, except that little wing on the rear of the plate hit on the frame and prevented the mower lift from locking in the top position. I had to bend it a bit to get it to slide up all the way. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm visually oriented for sure and any pictures help a great deal.

Thanks for the welcome all! I'm glad this is helpful to some folks, it's a fairly simple installation but this was my first real tractor so it probably took me a little longer than most to figure out where all the parts/controls were. It would be nice if they had something to better protect the fan from the factory but this option is fairly inexpensive and easy to install so it works out alright. For anyone with a BX I would recommend it.

Great report.

I've got that skid on my BX2660. It's a good unit all the way around. Easy-on and easy-off are a big plus. I use it when I bushhog.

Thank you for this as I'll be installing the same plate in the next several weeks.

Had the same interference but instead of bending that tab, all I had to do was adjust the locking height at the left rear of the BX. Mine was set too high and before the adjustment, my MMM would clang about in TOP position. Now all is good and the plate cinches up nice and tight.

Shett, I am new to the SC Tractor world and have been trying to decide which skid plates would work best for my BX2660 (mean time being very careful where I drive). This post with the pictures was very helpful in seeing just what protection this skid plate provides. The ease of taking the plate off and on is great. And thanks to all for the posts on your installation issues and explanations. I'll be ordering soon! Then I will be able to work on my hedge row area and small over grown field with a lot more peace of mind. You didn't mention which brand of beer works best though, so guess I just have to experiment a bit with that step! :drink:
Thanks for the post!

PS: You did not mention if you can leave the factory mounted skid protector in place or does it have to be removed?

Whoops, I see in the picture now, going back to it that the factory skid plate protector is left in place. So that is also a convenience.

Glad this info was helpful for you, it really does add a lot of peace of mind for me. I just did the 50-hour service on my tractor so I had a chance to get underneath and check it out after doing a lot of field clearing of mesquite and desert brooms. There was a little bit of dirt/dust on the top of the skid plate (read - between the skid plate and the tractor) but overall it was in great shape. With as many sticks and such as I've run over out here I'm pretty happy with the decision to get the plate. I would recommend this skid plate to anyone who has a BX, but I don't use a MMM so you might have to keep that in mind.

I have the MMM but I think I can schedule my work so that I would be in the rough terrain when the MMM is off and the Under Armor on, and it would stay on for the winter plowing. I have not read here on TBN how to change the hydo filter with the Bro-Tek plate on. If the plate has to come off to do rear maintenance or any other service or cleaning it looks inconvenient to take off. Though maybe that type of activity is done so infrequently most would not consider it a big deal. My one time mounting the MMM after servicing it & checking the blades (I only got my used 2660 in August) I found it cumbersome trying to reattach the drive shaft to the Mid-PTO, so more restriction there is not attractive to me. Anyway, I think the convenience of putting the skid plate on and off so quickly, and the fact that the factory plate and the MMM seems to provide adequate protection operating outside of woody, brushy areas makes me lean to the BXpanded for my purposes. I really only gave it the second look today because I found your post. If Bro-Tek users could chip in with comments on mounting and dismounting that unit I would appreciate it as well. (May have to start a new thread though?) Thanks again and, Be well.
