Re: Information on battery \"issue\"

You may be out of luck with the Optima battery. The size used for the 4310 (and your 4410) is the D51R. This battery has been discontinued by Optima. You may still be able to find one but the odds are slim. I placed an order for one at a Sears Auto center. They have one coming in from another store but I was told it had a manufacturer's date code of 2004.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I know this is an old topic but I just had to replace my battery on my 4310. I have not fully paid attention to this problem of the pastj and now find myself with a very rusted pan and radiator that has also started to rust. I had to grind off what was left of the bolts holding the battery down. My battery was the new type (lva11726) With the amount of damage done to my tractor, my question is has anybody had repairs of this nature done under warranty? The strange thing about the acid is the level was perfectly fine when I checked it when I replaced it and this was the only time I had checked it in the 1 1/2yrs since buying the tractor.
My question is should I take it to the local dealer to check out under warranty or should I just start to complain to somebody higher?

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I would take it to the dealer first. If it is only 1 1/2 years old, warranty should cover it, no questions asked. If the dealer does not want to do this, then by all means, complain to JD direct.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I think my 4720 is leaking. I will have the dealer fix it when I take it in for the grapple to be setup on it.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I have a 2004 4310H that I picked up new in May 2005 and now has 126hrs on it. Around Sept 2007 I noticed a white crystallization on the floor under the front of the tractor. I pulled the front grill and my oil cooler was all corroded but
no corrosion on battery. I contacted my local dealer in October and they said its out of warranty and the best they can do is I pay 1/3, the dealer pay 1/3 and Deere would pay 1/3. They said they have not heard of this being a problem on the xx10 series tractors. I called the mother Deere customer 800 number and they said the dealer has the final say and would not take it to the next level. So i am going to pay 1/3 the cost for the oil cooler and replace the battery on my own.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I purchased my 4700 new back in 2000. Got about 1000 hours on it now. Every 3 years I have had to replace the StrongBox battery in it (and this is despite the fact that the 4700 sits in a climate controlled shop when not in use). I got a lot of corrosion below the battery and on the hold down bracket and bolts. I had to replace those about 3 years ago as they had pretty much disintegrated.

Is there a drop-in Optima yellow top for the 4700?

I'm running a pair of red top Optimas in my '02 Duramax 3500 and they are great. It never occured to me to drop an Optima in my tractor.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

Not sure what size the battery is in your 4700. But this past weekend I put an Optima Yellow Top (D51R) in my 4410. The dimensions are (from the optima website) 9.313" x 5.063" x 8.938" (LxWxH). I went through 2 JD Not-So Strong Boxes in 3 years... my tractor was also garage kept, so I was not about to spend another $100 on a battery that hasn't lasted for me yet and tends to leak through the vent caps corroding the front of the tractor/radiator.

The Optima Yellow D51R fits in there nicely, but the stock hold downs don't work on this battery... so I plan to come up with something this weekend to hold it down and dampen vibration. I read a lot of posts where the D51R was discontinued a few years ago.. but I picked one up at Advance Auto and the date was within a year. It was funny because the guy I bought it from said he put the same battery in his New Holland because of the same reasons I gave him.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

Looking at the Optima website, their 2 biggest ones are as follows (compared to my OEM):

OEM 650 CCA 12.5" L x 6.812" W x 8.938" H
D34 750 CCA 10.0" L x 6.875" W x 7.813" H
D35 650 CCA 9.313" L x 6.813" W x 7.625" H

Heck, I think the commercial Yellow Top is an even better fit:

D31 900 CCA 12.813" L x 6.5" W x 9.375 H

I'll have to do some meassuring. That Yellow Top commercial weighs in at 60 lbs compared to 34 lbs for the OEM, so that is an added bonus.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

According to Optima Customer Service, the Optima D51R was re-introduced to the market about 5 months ago. The cranking amps , cold cranking amps, and reserve, has been lowered a bit, to confirm performance. One of the reasons for being temporairly pulled from the market was the battery not always meeting spec. due to material used in construction of the battery. Just replaced my previous Optima in the JD 4310, no gamble on leaking acid.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

"D31 900 CCA 12.813" L x 6.5" W x 9.375 H"

With that much CCA capability, i could start my tractor and 4 other vehicles!

Re: Information on battery "issue"

Well, my 6 mos old 4320 has battery acid leaking down on the concrete floor. I removed the battery and found badly corroded hold down bolts and floor of battery compartment. Called the dealer and they are picking up the tractor to replace battery and paint corroded area.
Seems like this is an old ongoing issue that should have been resolved by now -- some threads go back 3 years.
Can't complain about the service.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

Hey Sunnyside...I had the same problem too. Make them clean/repaint the area, and have the dealer install a new battery. Mine did, but the battery was a cheap no name battery.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

If this happens to me i might go for the heavy duty sealed optima and use the warranty provideed Deere battery for something else.

Actually I did call the dealer and they are going to clean up and paint the battery compartment and replace the battery. They are also going to replace the fuel sending unit to fix erratic readings. In addition, they are going to fix a coolant leak which just recently started after 75 hrs. Other than that the tractor has been great.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

Just an update on my battery issue with the 2520 mentioned somewhere way back:

I started getting electrolyte on the top and running down the side of the battery after I mistakenly filled the cells to the bottom of the plastic housing. To correct the situation, I used a plastic syringe to remove some electrolyte back down to halfway between the top of the plates and the bottom of the plastic housing (where it says to keep the level in the manual).

I usually keep batteries topped up to the bottom of the plastic in everything else and don't have this problem, but the tractor is different for some reason.

Anyway, once I got the level back where the manual calls for, no more problems.

Wish it were that simple on mine. I checked the acid level in each cell and all are okay. I've never added water since owning the tractor.

Re: Information on battery "issue"

I have not had problems with my new 2520 but only 28 hours on it. Has anyone tried just putting the battery in a plastic battery case and mount the whole thing in the tractor. I think that eventually all batteries other than sealed maintenance free and gel units will eventually leak. Looks like there's enough room in my 2520 for a plastic battery box if there is one the correct size.
