Thanks to everyone for the information.

Ford used some 'lever' actuated hyd clutch packs in some implementations of independent , or live pto. ( oldies ).

Also.. the ind PTO on my NH is a lever.. feels like a good amount of mechanical resistance, and not a simple electrical solenoid style switch.

I hear that some mahindra have an electric engaged pto solenoid.

( Another newbie question: Is the dual stage clutch on a gear tractor the method for obtaining the independent PTO or is this one of more ways to obtain the independent PTO on a geared tractor? )

Techinically, a live pto is _not_ the same as an idependent pto.

The 2 stage ptos are considered live. They are not, however, independent.

A live pto allows you to change tractor gears while keeping the pto running. However, to engage the pto, you need to stop forward motion of the tractor - uses the same pedal to operate both clutches.

An independent pto uses a totally seperate lever to operate the pto clutch, so you may engauge or disengauge either the tranny and/or the pto at any time, totally independent of each other. Some are lever operated, as in a hand clutch, and others are hydraulicly operated, as in the lever you move changes the flow of hydraulics which apply the pto clutch.

If you are using the foot pedal to operate both the pto & tranny clutches, then you have live pto, not independent.

If you only have one clutch operated with the foot pedal, than you have neither live or independent.

Thanks, that explaination really gives meaning to the term independent. I'm beginning to think that an independent PTO is a nice convienence, but generally not a necessity. However with that conveinence, one would get more possibilies for machine failure.

I'm perfectly happy with live pto on 2 of my tractors, and prefer it for post hole digging - better than an independent for that job.

The independent pto on my IHC 300 tractor which I use with the baler is nice, can pick up little wads of hay without stopping driving. Have one other tractor with a hand lever independent pto, but don't use pto that much. Nice tho.

I'm not so happy with the hydraulic operated independent ptos on my bigger tractors. They slam the pto pretty hard, can't feather a big load, and the pto brake slams in too can be hard on some implements. Also one has the hyds wore out, so the pto doesn't work well & is wearing out my clutches. When involving 2 systems like this, they become interdependent & repair bills go up to fix either.....
