Hi,

I am hoping someone will be able to answer what seems a simple question.

As you may be aware I have a compact tractor (MF) with an independent PTO, I can flick the switch in the cab to turn it on and select what speed to run at.

The question I have is when idle and setting the speed is it then running at that speed or is it reliant on the engine speed to get up to the 540 etc?

Thanks,

Kevin

It relies on engine speed. Usually your tachometer will have an indicator arrow identified as "PTO" which is the engine rpm to operate at to have the full 540 (or 1000 if equipped) PTO speed.

It relies on engine speed, lower RPM = lower pto speed, no matter how you turn it on...

Also...just to note....don't be at engine RPM for 540 PTO and flip it on. lower engine speed, engage PTO, then bring engine RPM back up to right #. Very harsh start on something like a bush hog otherwise unless your electronic PTO has a soft engage of some sort.

Even if it has a soft engage it's harder on the clutches if the engine is running fast. I engage stuff with the engine at idle. It works ok even with the PTO chipper that has a heavy flywheel running at twice PTO speed.

Thanks all, mine is a digital display with a soft start so don't have the indicator but I get the drift. That is probably why it comes with a hand throttle as well so you can maintain the correct revs easier.
