In frame boring

I have been following the post on sleeving the ford 3000.I too have a restoration underway on a 68 3000 diesel.It belonged to my late FIL and needs serious attention.In the yesterdaystractor forum a in-frame boring device has been mentioned.I have searched and cannot find any information about this item.I would not even consider it but I presently am physically unable to do so at this time.Cervical Fusion on 3 vertebrates and now 3 more discs going bad.My wife has grounded me even from my new ride.I am making plans though for a very busy "07" and if this tool does exist I could sure use it.

I have never heard of that, but who knows. Sounds like some specialized equipment.

Do a search for Portable cylinder Boring Machines. You will get some hits.

To get your hands on one try the rental places or you may have to call in a fellow who specializes in this. There are also portable crank turning machines.

With a bad back I would suggest a trip to an engine re builder as they will produce a better end product.

It may cost more but would really make it easy on your back. Backs are important and easily overused!

Have you given any thought to just rough and finish honing of the piston bores ? I would think that might work for you and be much easier to do with a 1/2" drill and some diesel fuel !

I thank you all for your concerns.I mentioned my health problems so that you would understand my reasoning for trying to bore block with it intact.A helper that can think,speak english and work cheap is extinct.I dont want to split the tractor by myself.I know and yes I have preached about proper engine rebuilding practices.I have priced a rebuilt shortblock and hiring out the mechanic work.It would cost just under 5000.00.Its not worth it.If I can find a way to get 1 cylinder sleeved without removing the engine I will fix it.Let me run this idea past you good people.I am a pattern and moldmaker by trade and I have a huge radial arm drill press in my shop.I think I can indicate the whole tractor in with 4 hydraulic jacks.That would be the hardest part but I think it would be a whole lot eaiser on my back.I did do a quick online search for a link and got a couple results but they sound expensive.Thanks for your help.

Having rebulit many engines, I can understand your plight about care for you back, while still acheiving the goal of a restored engine. Have you given any serious thought of just setting it up under your radial arm drill with the excellent idea of using the hydraulic jack for alignement, and stability. Then straight stone hone the one very bad cylinder to the next size up, maybe 0.010" over. It may not clean up perfect, but good to install an oversize piston in just that cylinder. I just don't think that the one cylinder being over sized that little amount will hurt anything. These engine are slow speed, and you can balance that piston against the others, and remove a tad of weight from it. Just a thought. Can't make any judgement calls of the shape of the engine due to not much being posted about it. Tool and Die guys are the tops in the machining field.......

I did forget to mention that the reason for boring and sleeving is a hairline crack in a water jacket.I will probally wait until I heal if that is possible and replace the block with a reman.Has anybody on here ever had an endoscopic epidural?Thats next and if you have had one please let me know what I am in for.
