Massey-Ferguson 1529
Silly question, went to drain my Transmission oil on my Massey 1529, and the drain plug started to round off. I immediately abandoned the mission before it got real bad and ordered an Irwin bolt grip socket to try and remove it. So, is an impact gun a good or bad idea to use ? I haven't tried the breaker bar or ratchet yet but was just wondering what peoples thoughts were...... Thankyou for any input!!

An impact might just do the trick better than brute force with a breaker bar. Have to make sure your socket fits well.

Make sure you use a 6 point socket, 12 points just catch the corners.

Is it a square plug. There are special scokets for square heads.
I would and have used an impact wrench to remove a lot of things that you are not suppose to. Including spark plugs.
Start out low on the impact.

The vibration from and impact will often shake loose a stubborn fastener. I would go at it easy though.

Bad idea. You have no 'feel' for the fastener's willingness to loosen when using an impact gun. If you strip it you're done.
I'd go with as small a breaker bar as possible and work up. If it won't start to move you may be up ****es creek Try tapping on the flat part of the bolt head first to vibrate the threads loose, if at all possible. Sometime that can work...

Impact would be tempting if you start real easy. I would prefer a breaker bar so you could feel the tension. Also, add some penetrating oil as best you can. That's where it's sticking.

I wouldnt have a moments hesitation using an impact.

Penetrating oil is going to be of little help IMO. Because its a drain plug, not just a bolt. It will likely have a copper washer or rubber washer (or even pipe thread) that is designed to SEAL. And its a drain plug, threaaded up into an oil pan. So there is plenty of lube. Seized is not your problem. And overtorqued plug is your problem

I would expect a proper fitting square plug socket to be the solution. Just put that on a breaker bar and have at it. Sounds like you were using a crescent wrench, which should really be called a "bolt head stripper".
