Apparently I have too much time on my hands and I decided it was time to make this little puzzle.

So how does the nut come off?

If you know the answer, wait for a few guesses before chiming in.

Edit: for those that think the round ends unscrew from the threaded shaft, you are wrong. Neither end unscrews from the threads.

That's a common "toy" for new machinists. I think I first saw that in the 90s. Pretty sure it's been on U-Tube as well.

So, what lathe did you buy? :D

The only way the nut can come off is if the threaded area pulls apart because it’s not a solid piece but fits together by sliding.

Well that didn't last long. :) I knew not to post it on the Hobby Machinist forum, since that is where I got the idea but didn't figure there would be a bunch of machinists on a tractor forum. Looks like I was wrong again. Don't tell my wife.

MoKelly, you are right and wrong at the same time. The threaded part does come apart but not by sliding.

edit; I have 2 small King Canada lathes. The first one I got is a 10" x22" and the second, more robust one is a 12" x 36". The second is a much heavier and nicer lathe but it is still a Chinese lathe and has its deficiencies. No matter how you look at it, a Chinese lathe is still better than no lathe at all.

I did a Google search and it said by castration

My guess is another set of smaller threads within the center section somewhere. Bonus points for left hand thread so someone trying to muscle the end piece off won't "find" the hidden threads by accident.
