Welcomt to TBN. Can't let you marines get ahead of us Navy men. 20 years and done. Never on a ship the whole time. P-3 Navy all the way. Chasing subs or in that related field the whole time. Best thing I ever did. Retired professionaly in 97. Now a stay at home Dad who on some day's would go back to half days for a break. How many times can one guy watch Cat machines? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gifDon't know but I'm still counting. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Welcome aboard!!! Get it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"The few, the proud" - there's not supposed to be a lot of us.

OK, not that anyone's keeping count... actually I am, where's the Air Force?
If I interpreted everyone's branch correctly, the Navy is ahead but not 1 airman.

Re: I\'m a New Member

Well, actually I fall in a couple of categories. Marines first and always, but wounds prevented me from passing the PFT under the time limit so I switched over to the navy. Two years in the Marines and eleven more in the navy...with nine of those years at sea: SSN, CG, DDG, and MSO.

And no offense, Alan, but while you might have thought you were chasing subs, we were just toying with you guys. Though those pesty P3s did have a way of forcing us to stay deep where it was harder to press an attack! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Still, my first love was the Marine Corps. And while I consider myself a navy vet, I still call myself a Marine. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey John

Expect some grief coming from members for the first point.

For the second point, I wonder if the moderators are looking at that one and wondering if it is broaching political. If the post is still there tomorrow, I'll reply to the point.

Re: I\'m a New Member

bczoom; Agreed on both points. A number of months, or longer, ago. Someone started a thread I think entitled, Should they bring back the Draft? It seemed to be pretty well received so I think I'll be safe with the last post of mine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since your a jarhead, I pretty sure I can count on you!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OK, if you saw that it's safe, I'll reply.

I don't think we explicitly need a draft.

What I would like to see is something that was in place in the late 70's and ended in 1982. For the Marines, it was called a 82 day reservist. The 82 days was the length of boot camp. After completing boot camp, you were back in the civilian world. But... if there was to be a draft, you're automatically first.

The reason I like the idea is because of what boot camp will do to a person. I wasn't a bad kid when I went in, but after boot camp, I was a lot better person. The things you learn about self respect, integrity, morality... is something I think each 18 year old would benefit from.

Re: I\'m a New Member

bczoom; Some good points. I tend to get a little carried away when it comes to service to our country, maybe even a little callous. The bootcamp idea sounds reasonable, almost anything might be better then nothing. You know whats really great though? These kids we have in there now didn't have to be drafted or even threatened by it to make the decision they did. Everyone one them, male/female, USN, USMC, or whatever, deserve every bit of support from all of us. Just because they may not be the modern heros in Iraq or Afghanistan, they could be called at any time to give everything if needed. I wish everyone of them the best, and Thankyou. Oh, and also the parents of these kids, they better be VERY proud of their son or daughter.

Re: I\'m a New Member

Talking about service and the value of the armed forces and such is great but let's keep the draft, any deragatory comments like moron corporations and such off of here. Have a good time and talk all you want about your personal service and your pride in your service but please keep the other side of it off of here. Feel free to PM or email each other. And yes thank you all for your service. My father paid the ultimate price with his life for this country so yeah I'm proud of all the armed forces.

Richard; You know what, you're right. I seem to rant and rave alot, and even tend to hijack threads. This is a place to have fun, no doubt about, and most us do. Your words are heeded. Sorry guys. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: I\'m a New Member

John,
Gotta remember that it was the USCG that runs the riverboats and landing craft when you guy go on ground. When it is a shore landing the three work togther.

Re: I\'m a New Member

That's because I got thrown into the wrong crowd. Bad enough when I do it on my own. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif You must have missed the second part Golfgar, your son is close to doing the right thing. I wouldn't trade my spent days for anything. Now, just sway him to "a better way of life". The US Air Force. Air travel is much better than sea or land, the food is better, "exotic foreign travel" tends to be shorter in length, etc.. One of my personal favorites to irritate the army folk I work with now, in the Air Force you check to see which accomodations accept Visa . No one is expected to carry their bed with them.

Due in some part to PC, from what I see, some of those core values are not as strongly instilled. Don't get me too wrong because what I see in the "outside world" is worse.

Well you gotta add another Jarhead to the list Bczoom /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the mens dept. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was 82-86, attached to the 4th MAW, in a RAG (training) outfit on Whidbey Island EA-6B's. Newbie officers all around breaking planes.

trouble, "does not slew in third position"
Fix, "third position is OFF, NTF"

trouble. "ADI ball not moving"
Fix. "moved switch to on position,NTF"
(that was for a navy pilot on det, he was the XO of his squadron)

BTW the code for NTF is 11-A-799, I used it a lot /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is getting too weird (queue music from the Twilight Zone).
- 3 of the 4 Marines listed so far all served the same years (82-86)
- You and I both worked on EA-6B's (I worked "I" level on the jammers) prior to switching to helicopters.
- You and I currently live 20 miles apart.
- If we dug deeper, we may find we were stationed together. Marine1 and I were in Jacksonville together. If you did EA-6B's, do I assume correctly you were stationed at Millington probably in 1983?

I knew the world was small, but not this small. Three Marines from the same years? Who knew? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Marine Corps Birthday is in 5 days. Be sure to toast our Brothers and Sisters who are in harms way and let's not forget our fallen on Veterans Day.
Thanks to all who served and are currently serving our country.
Thanks to everyone for the kind welcome. This is a great site. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
