IH 595 tractor PTO problem

After an hour or two PTO stops working if I put tractor in reverse it will work again for awhile then stop completely if I stop the tractor for four or five hours it repeats the same cycle. Also just lately the PTO keeps turning slowly when not engaged , any help would be appreciated, thanks.

This sounds awfully similar to how my Mahindra 3616 acted when/right before the one way pto clutch failed. The pto would stop under use at times, restart after a slight reverse. And the shaft would spun slowly but could be stopped by hand. I'm not sure of anything on your model. But now I'm going to look into it.

That series IH tractors had no one way clutch. Only a hydraulic clutch pack, which in this case I believe is suspect. Losing power to drive a load could be a low/insufficient pressure problem, but the creeping when turned off symptom is more likely a result of some mangled clutch drive discs. The drag between the clutch plates is overcoming the brake plate so the unit continues to turn. I see a clutch pack repair in your near future.
