IF you own a freezer......

   / IF you own a freezer...... #143
This thread got me to purchase one of the thermometers for my 2 chest freezers. I read the reviews and KeeKit brand. It is working GREAT! I'm surprised at how well the freezers hold temperature. Over a 24hour period, the temperature is held within 2°F. I was surprised though on how much of an increase I'd get when placing in about half a cubit food of room temperature food. In a mostly full freezer that freezer increased about 6°F and it took over 10 hours to fully recover.

For the experiment done with a full versus empty freezer, the energy savings comes from the lack of air exchange when the freezer is open. I would not expect there to be any difference if the freezer is never opened. I believe this is also why chest freezers are better for energy. There is not as big of an air exchange when you open the door.

Some freezers have a "rapid chill" or "blast" cooling mode to help deal with the demands of cooling large amounts of food. However, in my experience, most the freezers that I have owned seem to get by with pretty small refrigeration systems that don't have much additional cooling capacity.

All the best,

Peter

True, the cold air literally falls out of the door opening on an upright. Stays in the chest type.

Totally agree. Chest is more efficient if you actually use the freezer. :)

Upright. Door never opened during either test.

I believe that's what makes the difference. As I mentioned earlier, I run one or two freezers year round over the past 30 years and have never seen a difference in my power bills; the fans I run to cool the house in summer cost more to run. Yet I might go a couple of weeks without opening one or the other. Rather, I take a few things out and put them in the top of the refrigerator.
