True, the cold air literally falls out of the door opening on an upright. Stays in the chest type.For the experiment done with a full versus empty freezer, the energy savings comes from the lack of air exchange when the freezer is open. I would not expect there to be any difference if the freezer is never opened. I believe this is also why chest freezers are better for energy. There is not as big of an air exchange when you open the door.
