If there are aliens, what will they look like?

The very question gets to religion very quickly. Its in a sense, a religious frame work, that there is other intelligent life out there: that has to conform to other established religions. Its the base of religions belief here in, all our many religions traditions show to follow? Sci-fi has to play the game for the market they wish to sell too. So in a Western world we will never see any thing that will let sci-fi allow any thing else but a WHITE GUY, to fix things. In a sci-fi fantasy, with the exception of Aliens. So, that's what people think science is. They have been crafted by what sells and people buy because they don't know better. The Alien stuff has always followed this.
Aliens Can't Get Here. Its too far away. And we can't get there, cause its too far away.

So we make up all sorts of things to get a around the speed of light, and accept those things to be possibly real. So far we know the speed of light is a limit. And all you people that think quantum mechanics breaks this, of which, you guys can live in my back yard, till the LSD wears off..... Then, you will have to move on. :)

I suspect we can't travel fast because all the Quantum mechanics are in Africa.

I think aliens may already be living among us. Just go into any Wal-Mart after 2:00AM, and you'll see some likely candidates roaming around buying Earth dodads to take back with them when the mothership returns.

In a more serious note, what are tour thoughts on panspermia, the possibility that life on Earth was "seeded" by meteors or asteroids that contained the genetic material of life from another planet in another solar system?

I think they would look like us; pretty sure we crash landed here. If not us, then octopuses. Octopuses definitely crash landed here. They (Octopuses, cuttlefish, and the like) have no genetic cousins and they're super weird. I don't think we should be eating them.

There's been more than one theory discussing that...and, why not? It's as viable a theory as any others...

That makes as much sense as any other theory.

I don't. ;)

Let's keep science fiction to the movies, where it belongs. I read lots of science fiction books but understand that the universe as we are told by the NAZA shamans is nothing more than CGI and cartoons.

Since the UFO thread got closed, I'm interested in what others think intelligent aliens might look like.

Personally, I'm inclined to to think that if they evolved on a planet similar to Earth, they would look somewhat like us, bi-laterally symmetrical, Heads with two eyes for binocular vision, one or more limbs with hands and fingers to be able to manipulate objects, and two or maybe four legs. While there may be intelligent races that have evolved in seas on other planets that look like fish, whales or big jellyfish, they aren't going to be able to develop or build interplanetary space ships or propulsion systems.
Evolution on this planet over a few hundred millions years has seemed to have settled on this body format for a great number of species, so it must have inherent advantages for survival.
While there are species like whales, Orcas and Dolphins that may be intelligent and live in social groups, their bodies have not allowed them to develop any technology that they can manipulate. Other species like ants live in large social groups and can cooperate to use objects and materials as tools and raw materials, but aren't individually intelligent.

What are your thoughts on this?
And PLEASE, keep your religious views on this subject out of the conversation.

If there can't be any science fiction in thread with a title like this one has, then what can there be? Anybody have scientific data on this topic? Anyone? No?

The panspermia theory just moves the problem of the origin of life from Earth to some other place.

I am of the opinion that science and religion must in the end agree. There is only one truth. Religious teachings that refute proven science are merely superstition. On the other hand as we learn more, old science is continually refuted by new science. Our grasp of, even our ability to grasp the totality of science is quite limited. (We ain't nearly as smart as we think we are)

Science and science fiction go hand in hand on some fronts.

Science fiction come up with the ideas, and a scientist figures out how to make it work.

Yep. I could actually point out many of such agreements.

And your “teachings” statement begins to get at something very much missing in modern organized religion.

How about we get back to the original question of what do you think they'd look like and not what church they go to? ;)

I wonder where the common "look" came from: big eyes, small nose, no hair, no ears, no clothes, humanish shape.
