Idler Pulleys

When I had my PTO replaced a few weeks back, the dealer had replaced the idler pulleys that are mounted on the front of the tractor. They were noted on the Work Order as "bad". They gave me the old pulleys back but I don't know what to look for? The old ones look fine to me but I am not as mechanical as some of you.

This is the third set so I am just curious. ( the others were replaced under warranty)

When you spin the pulley is it very smooth or are there either rough spots or does it feel notchy? I get the feeling the bearing is probably bad. Though it's kind of hard to tell through a computer screen.

Most dealers will do that as a precaution, as the PTO clutch is so expensive. I would likely do the same thing if I worked as a tech. Even a little wobble in the bearings on the idlers can increase the stress on the PTO clutch quite a bit.

They seem to spin a little rough so most likely the bearings are shot.

Personally, I think it is a good idea to replace the idler pulleys. They are usually the first thing to go wrong on the deck. That is, if you keep your spindles greased properly.
Also, idler pulleys on most mowers do not have grease fittings.
I think your mechanic was trying to help you avoid another problem. "idler pulley failure".
