I have been using that concept for years. I have them on my log splitter, which has an electric winch on a swinging boom to lift large chunks onto the splitter. Works well. Both the winch and battery box are mounted on stubs. That way I can use the winch on other machines. I also have some on trailers for tongue jacks to use a stabilizers and such. All my trailers have a removeable hitch which makes them a bit harder to steal and I can change from a ball hitch to a pin hitch in a snap.

I have mounted "receivers" like you are talking about . I have been dealing in Grey tractors for a few years and have a stock pile of PTO shaft that I have cut to length for various implements. It is 3 sided. I weld a piece on to the scaffold and the mate on what ever I need to attach. It is a good fit and won't turn. A hole and bolt and it is locked in. It is light but strong.
