looking to make a pipe edge for my plow blade, so on the ends, to keep it from digging in, I want to cap it with a ball , so racking my memory what I can source, like what they might cap a stair railing with..
Any ideas ??thx
I see these, have to find them in Canada or in Fl//
Otherwise.I;m taking a piece of 1/8th flat plate from I have, lay it over a piece of pipe, cherry it up, and lay a trailer ball over it and a couple wacks with Mr 5LB hammer

Go to your local hardware store, buy a black iron pipe cap of about the same outside diameter as your pipe, and weld it on.

Look around-some are more rounded than others.

If you have any fencing contractors around that do ornamental iron work, I'd check with them. They might have some on hand, it would be cheaper getting them from them as King has some pretty high shipping rates, if I recall correctly.

BCP,

Those look like threaded malleable iron (closer to cast iron than the mild steel pipe) caps. they do not weld well to mild steel and any little force will break the weld apart. Steel caps capable of butt welding to the pipe are pretty spendy and not available in the retail market only at pipe supply wholesalers.

If that is the OP's solution he should consider bronze welding with a torch.

I'd do what Dave said, easy with angle grinder and cutoff blade. You'd be done in half the time than it takes to research & order & receive a round cap. Good description (orange peel)!

Cut the top half off of a trailer ball, then cut the shank off the other half? Should be easy with a chop saw. Wouldn't be a perfect dome, but should be adequate for what you need, and plenty strong.

If any of you guys are interested, here is a little more detail on orange peel.
