I received a notice in the mail for over due tolls on a leased company car I no longer drove but was still in service so suspect a bill would be mailed to the address on file for the license plate scanned.

I had removed that license from my I-pass account but lease company had not taken ownership. Took sometime to get that squared away.

If remember correctly late fees, etc. where way in excess of tolls and notice stated after xx date would be turned over to collection service.
My question relates to an out of state toll bill. Can they enforce collection on non residents? I received a small toll bill from Texas last summer, misplaced it and forgot about it. I haven’t received another bill.

IIRC, that toll road (E-470) was sold as a way to improve speeds and reduce times for (some) commuters, who would be willing to pay to reduce travel times. It really took off when DIA became a reality. They've proactively added extra lanes around Aurora specifically to keep traffic speeds up.

The road has also spawned a wide belt of development, benefiting many of the local governments that planned and executed the road.

I think it is an interesting case study of roads and communities.

All the best,

Peter
I don’t think E-470 is a toll road anymore. I drove the entire length of that road back in June.

When they first introduced them here in the early-mid 00s the transponder was free. Not sure when they started charging for them.
Yeah, I think all of my transponders (3) were free. Guess I've had them for a while!

I'm not sure what the rule is. Try driving through Oklahoma. Interstate Highway 44 becomes a toll highway. There are two lane roads that you can bypass some, but the main interstate highway is toll.

Just to the south side of Chicago, the main freeway becomes a tollway. Interstate 94/294/80?

Oregon/Washington is planning on replacing the main Interstate 5 Columbia river crossing. About half the money is supposed to be federal grant money, and half is supposed to be state funded between the two states. And there is a proposal to do the state proportion with tolls. I'm not excited about that, but I don't get up there very often. It will be interesting the impact if the I-5 crossing becomes a toll bridge, and the I-205 crossing remains free.

California puts tolls on many of the roads leading to San Francisco, or the bridges in and out of parts of the metro area. This includes the Golden Gate Bridge. I'm pretty sure they are state owned.
The Astoria-Megler bridge on 101 was a toll bridge until the bond was retired. Then they removed the toll. Sam Jackson on 205 was built in the late '70s when the feds were still funding infrastructure. What a difference 50 years makes.

Well, I defer to anyone who who has driven it recently, but when I last did in 2018, it was a toll road, and the authority seems to think it is still a toll road;

🤷‍♂️

In Oklahoma they have a crazy system where if you enter the toll road without a transponder you drive through a separate lane and get a ticket from an attendant and pay for the entire distance for the toll road. If you get off early you have to go through a separate lane and get a refund from the attendant for what portion of the highway you did not drive on or it's not worth it you just go through the fast lane and forfeit the refund.

I think it should be unlawful for states or local governments to put tolls on US highways, especially the Interstate highway system.

Why?

Just don’t drive on those roads if you don’t agree with it.

I’m not paying any tolls because I don’t use the roads with tolls.

There are a couple roads in Minnesota you can pay to drive in that lane if you pay or have at least 2 people in vehicle. It is nice during rush hour using that road.

Tolls are immoral and should be illegal. They never end.
If someone can develop a fool proof way of defeating tolls I'm all in.

How would they maintain the roads with no money?

I hate toll roads in general. They make no sense, what are we paying road taxes for if it's not for the roads we drive on?
The road taxes probably don’t go to the toll roads. The users of the roads pay to maintain the roads.

Why? Because we already paid for those roads. Your argument makes sense for private toll roads (such as the loop around Denver).

I never received a bill and I drive it a few times a year. Maybe the license plate readers don’t work well?

By statute, a public funded interstate can't be tolled retroactively absent a waiver from DOT, and I don't know of any offhand.

Toll lanes and toll roads typically have bonds issued by the state toll authority which then fund the construction/operations and are paid off by tolls.

In the examples I know of where an interstate is tolled, they were built without federal funds.
