It's been getting down into the 30's here for a while, or at least low 40's. Would be fine if SIL and I weren't in the middle of replacing the furnace with a heat pump furnace combo. Since it's an after-work job for the both of us it is taking a while, mainly due to all new duct work. So, I've been using the big see-through fireplace to keep SWMBO from swatting me too hard. We usually only have fires for the fun of it, so it has been gratifying to find that that big sandstone pile in the living room actually can have a practical value!

P.S. Be well, Bird.

We have a fire place out on our patio. When the weather gets 60 or below, My wife and I like nothing better than to sit out there with the fire going and drink the first cup of coffee in the morning while the sun comes up. Dogs seem to enjoy it as well.

That is nice ... we have a fire pit just off the patio, the only way we actually feel that is to be next to it!!

I think the dogs (and Cats) just simply enjoy the fact someone is out there with them.

20's up here this morning( Buffalo NY) No wood fire yet though we have been seriously thinking about it. (55-65 degrees inside)

55-65 INSIDE the house!!!! :confused2:

The wifey would be frozen solid. :D

Even during the coldest days when the temp gets down into the single digits or the teens our little wood stove keeps the far side of the house at 65. The rest of the house is in the low 70s. SWMBO finds that too cold.

Yesterday I got home and the house was 74. Before bed it was 73. This morning before sunrise it was 70. If we had drapes I am sure we could keep the house warmer if we closed the blinds. :D I almost started a fire last night but I had other chores to do.

Tonight I might start a fire to boost the temperature a bit. Supposed to be the same temperatures today as yesterday but overcast. Our house has some passive solar features which helps kick the temperature up this time of year. But with the clouds I think the house will not warm up so much.

If I kept the house at 55-65 the wifey leave. :D I tell her that we are supposed to keep the house at 65 but she will not listen. :D

Later,
Dan

Our house is set to 60 overnight, and 65 during the day. Gotta keep active otherwise it starts to feel chilly. Some friends have figured it out and take their slippers along when they visit in the winter :ashamed:

53 degrees and rain ... its actually a little cool. First one of the year!!

Nice looking setup.

Last year we started burning on October 1st and burned every day but 4 until April 1st.

This year I have only made 4 fires in October. I was going to make one last night, but was busy until just about bedtime, so no point. If its over 55 outside, our inside stays around 72 with no furnace. If I light a fire it will shoot up near 80 inside pretty quick. Once the days start dropping below 55 I will burn more seriously.

This was in our local paper a few years ago.

Got to love those people in central NY for sticking out so long!

Here it has been dipping into the 20's for a week or two and today it warmed right up to the mid 30's and we are expecting a warm spell tomorrow again.

Nothing but grass and leaves on the ground though.
