I have a 2021 Kawasaki mule PRO DXT Diesel 4x4 I bought used it is hard to start.

The mule runs good but it can be hard to start cold or warm. I go through the start process, turn the key on wait for the glow plug light to go out, and crank it sometimes it starts, other times it just cranks allmost starting. When it dose start there is alot of smoke. The battery is new, the fuel is fresh, air filter is clean, if I put a jump box on it, it starts up after cranking. Any help will be appreciated.

What happens if you wait for the glow plug light to go out - turn the key off - wait a beat, and then turn the key on again to activate the glow plug a second time, then crank when the light goes off?

I have tried that with no luck. I was thinking maybe it needed more heat.

It’s been my experience that when testing g plugs with a battery charger, they need to be cherry red within 10 seconds..

If you have a load tester I’d test the battery even though it’s new, probably not the problem. How is the fuel filters? A good running diesel shouldn’t need glow plugs to start when it’s warm out.

Is there a screen in the fuel tank?

Just a wild card… how is the air filter?


I had a hard starting diesel and glow plugs the culprit.

Do you have a volt ohm meter? If yes you can check to confirm getting power to the glow plugs. You can also disconnect the electrical connection to the glow plugs and then measure resistance (ohms) on each plug from electrical connector to ground. They should all be similar reading.

My Branson is cold blooded and doesn’t start well below 50 degrees without the glow plugs. It will start but takes some cranking and smokes like a chimney for a few seconds.

If remember correctly the BX1850 was a little cold blooded also.
