A few days ago, I whined about our entering another dry summer, here in my part of the gulf south. Well, not that one week changes a weather pattern, but the effects of tropical storm Allison have seen some pretty hefty rain amounts across the region. 20+ inches Saturday night in Houston. And, I've emptied my rain gage for just under 14 inches total since last Monday, and one of those days it was at the brim [5 in.] so I don't have a good reading for that day. My property is high, for SE Louisiana, so no danger of my place flooding, but everything is pretty soggy. My okra is under water, but that's my fault for placing it where I did. The rest of the garden is not showing any ill effects, yet. Sure could use a few days to dry out. Local rivers are at capacity, or already out of their banks.

There is another wave headed this way tonight. Should be interesting.

Let er rip! The complaining I mean. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Living near Seattle we do get the rain. We are up in the foothills to the cascade mts. and are a micro climate compared to the local news forcast. I'm always glad to hear others having rain. I'm not wishing any damage or safty problems on anyone. That happens too many times when you least expect it.

As for the okra, let it die. Both my folks come from Little Rock AR. and I was burned on the stuff as a child. Now if you were raising frog legs, we could talk more about that!!! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Stay high and dry and safe. We'll be thinking bout your rain gauge.

Oh and I did forget to add we are still 12" behind normal rain fall this year. All we hear about is the coming water shortages and such. Seattle won't be the rainy town this year. Just home of the Mariners and the best ball club for 2001.

Hey Tdog, if I buy you a plane ticket, would you come to Dallas, TX and complain?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I have been watering all weekend and I haven't had a drop of rain in nearly three weeks. It's not really dry yet, but when those 100º+ days come along, it will dry out very quickly. I talked to a friend in Wichita, Kansas today and she said her rain gauge had 8 inches in it this week. Oh well...nuthin' like being stuck in the middle./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I'm sure glad you finally got rain, but I hope it slows down a little for those folks who aren't lucky enough to be on the high ground.

As for rain... we could sure use any extra that y'all happen to get. It's been a pretty good spring so far, but I'm afraid we're head'n for some more dry, hot months.

Wow! That is an impressive amount of rain. In San Jose, just east of where I live, they are in the rain shadow of the mountains that I in. San Jose gets an average of 13" per year. Up where we live, we get more like 50 or 60 inches. Still I would hate to get that much liquid sunshine in one day.

Try staying dry...

Jinman, my brother lives in Richardson & called to see how we were doing after our rain even made the news. He said this weather system made it as far north & west as Terrell with a little rain, but non in his area. Gotta say, though, from the looks of the wild flowers on your place [in the photos forum?], the Decatur area can't be too bad off - - but going 3 weeks w/o the wet stuff is hard on you & your gardens.

For what it's worth, the last band of storms came through after midnight & put another 3" in my rain gage. That's just under 17", Monday through Sunday. The sad thing is that 50 or so miles south of here, closer to the coast, they reported close to 36 inches, more than they usually have in a month. Bunches of people with water in their homes & businesses.

Gotta side with you, FarmerBob, on the okra thing. Haven't had it in any form that I didn't like - - except maybe out of a tin can. That's one thing I can thank my grandmother for. When it starts to produce in July & August [if it ever gets dry feet], I bug my wife to have it in some form every night.

Whooaaa. Just got done watching the news on the 36" rains and 18 dead. You all be careful down there. Looks like some of you might be in for a fogged up gauge or two on them diesel water skippers.

We've replaced the okra with zucchini squash up here with the cooler nights and wetter growing season. Fryed, boiled, steamed and into bread. Kinda like a banana bread. Grows like a weed. Some have reffered to it as a lady's home companion but I'll leave that one alone.

Well Tdog... as I said... it's my favorite veggie... provid'n it's fried. I can't take that slimey stewed stuff. It's ok if it's cut up in homemade veggie soup too. I oughta have a bunch this year. Got a 50' row that's about 5' high now and start'n to bloom. I'm already get'n beans, cucumbers, 'n bell peppers from the garden... and my vines are full of BIG green tomatoes. Limas, onions, and corn is do'n good too. Yum...yum
