We still have about 18" of snow in the meadow, but there is a small patch of bare ground showing! I'm so excited! At this rate I might get to try that new finish mower by August!

Amazing how much snow is left. Was out last early in the evening yesterday riding on a snowmobile to map a trail network for cross country ski trails.

Wow. Back in January I swore we'd still have snow on the ground in May. By mid-February I was pretty excited to see the ground again. As much as I love snow, I think I'd be nuts by now If we still had some around. About all that's left here are some of the bigger piles in the mall parking lots (and they're just great grey globs of gunk by now). Hang in there, you too will be cutting grass soon enough /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Here in NY it went so fast... a foot of snow on the ground and then all of a sudden things start turning green over a weekend. Soon the trees should transform from the current grey tones. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Pete, I'm amzed that you still have so much snow!! I live in NY right next to the Vermont border, and our last snow was gone about a week ago! We spent this weedend getting the garden ready, and even planted asparagus!

Talked to my Dad (in north-central Minnesota) yesterday. Snow is bascially all melted, but the ice isn't off the lake yet. This is a little later than normal, but not by much.

Half ground, half snow

Rich -- After several days of 60 degrees and a steady breeze, the meadow is about 50/50 snow and ground. Very soft, soggy ground, but ground nevertheless. Spent a couple of hours yesterday removing snow from around the logs that will be next winter's firewood supply -- as luck would have it, I stored them in the snowiest part of the hill!

Tuppence, my golden retriever wonder pup, is still looking for snow to pee on. She'll have a hard time in a couple more weeks!

The runoff in the creek is a raging torrent this year! Sure am glad I held off putting in a culvert! Judging from the amount of water and branches running downhill a bridge might be the better option. One branch lodged across a culvert could result in a LOT of damage!

Our forest took a hit from the weight of the snow. Plenty of lower branches torn off the trees, and plenty of crotchy trees that split in two. One good thing about that is we never run out of firewood!

The deer herd is in sad shape this spring. Saw a couple of doe yesterday that were all skin and bones, with loose belly skin flapping in the wind. Wish I'd had the camera with me. Would love to have a photo of those animals to distribute to the idiots in the valley who feed them all summer...then go home to the big city when the weather turns cold leaving all those young deer to fend for themselves!

Tilled the ground two weekends ago, planted my vegetable garden last Sunday. Have mowed three times so far. (To be honest, my son mowed twice, and I once. How do I reclaim my tractor from a 12 year old?)

Per the local newscast today, yesterday (04/23), Leesburg, Virginia (guess about 15 nautical miles due west of me) recorded the highest temperature in the nation, 91 degrees (tied with Death Valley).
