I am looking at this air compressor at Tractor Supply - Ingersol 2-stage

Nobody mentioned the obvious that by going with a two stage compressor, the guy is going to be a lot happier from the get-go. Draining the tank and changing the oil on a regular basis will probably be all he needs with any of the ones he's looking at. But a good discussion, and valid observations!

I would recommend the IR type 30 compressor. It is a "v-twin" design that's been around for 75 years. Here is one example:

FREE SHIPPING — Ingersoll Rand Type-30 Reciprocating Air Compressor — 5 HP, 230 Volt 1 Phase, Model# 2340L5-V | 19 CFM Below Air Compressors| Northern Tool + Equipment

Yup, I came to the same conclusion. I am going to save a little longer and stretch the budget to include the T-30. Found it here...
Air Compressors & Tools | Air Compressors & Dryers | Ingersoll Rand Two-Stage Electric Air Compressor 2340L5-V-230-3, 230V, 5HP, 3PH, 60 Gal | B686885 - GlobalIndustrial.com
Looks like the best price I can find. Don't need it till next year, so will watch the price for a while.
THANKS to everyone for the education and information!

Forgive me if you know this already, but the one you listed is 3 phase. If you don't have 3 phase service in your shop, they make the exact compressor with 1 phase as well. I'm sure more than one person has mistakenly ordered the 3 phase version:)

Here is the one you want:

I am just in the process of repairing my IR T-30 compressor. It's been powering my shop for the last 13 years. So far, nothing wrong with the compressor except the vacuum check valve needed to be replaced and the points in the switch need finished/replaced. One thing I did do right was to install a timed self bleeder on the main tank to eliminate water buildup. If I had to do it all over again, I would make sure I bought one with a magnetic starter though. I feel 5hp is pushing a switch that comes with the standard T-30 configuration. My two cents worth.

This is a good idea. I have a spare magnetic starter laying around I can add.

You may have already thought about this, but what happened to the existing compressor?
If the motor and tank are still good and its belt driven, what about replacing the compressor?
If its direct driven, what about removing the compressor and installing a pulley?

That is an interesting question. The existing compressor is being left installed in the shop I am leaving, selling along with the home on five acres. It looks good setting there, it still works, is all plumbed in, I have had my use of it, I think it adds more value than its worth. New shop, new compressor for the next 25 years.
