Now I'm confused... do some HST units have a clutch for something?

Yup, mine does. I need it for starting, changing ranges, engaging either PTO and if ever need be - towing.

How do these other HST's work without a clutch? How do you know for sure that nothing is engaged. If that JD breaks down on a paved drive/road and you need to pull it aside to safety or onto a trailer, how do you put it in nuetral. That electronic switch is not going to work if the tractor is not running. Here comes the "My JD never breaks down" posts.

My JD has a "N" in the selector range. I would assume you would select neutral and it would roll.

Is this selector range the electronic part you mentioned. If it is electronically controlled, it's not going to work when the tractor is off or has a dead battery.

I'm not Tact but I can answer. The neutral is a mechanical neutral just like range A,B and C. Stop, select range with lever and go. No clutch needed. Neutral is true neutral.
