I replaced the oil in a axle that I have which is weak when hot. I used 2050 Mobil synthetic in it. The old oil was definitely heavier and dirty black. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these units. Mine is a 318-0319 model number /314-0510 series. I found a good used one cheap but the model number is 166786 and the same series number 314-0510. The linkage setup is different on the 166786 but and might be interchangeable by switching out the linkages. I could also try putting in 50 weight racing oil as I do not use this mower in cold weather.

I am a Hydro-gear dealer so I do an occasional rebuild if it is cost feasible. Sounds like you have scored the internal pump/center section/motor parts and in the process of complete failure. Hydro-gear dealer site doesn't have a way to compare trannies so I can't tell you the differences between the units.

Thanks for the info. I'll call Hydro gear to see is they can help me out. I also have a 3000 series transaxle that is from a real garden tractor that I could install in my Cub if it is doable.
