I have a JD 5520 and want to get a hydraulic toplink (top-n-tilt) for it. The question is, do I get one with a check-valve built in or does the tractor itself have a "check valve" built into it?
I would think the cylinder would drift down on it's own but am not sure.
Anyone have any experience with this general type of JD and a hydraulic top link?

Buy one with a double acting check valve. I would suggest the same for the tilt cylinder as well. I ran for years without having check valve cylinders and it seemed that the tilt cylinder would bleed off much faster than the top cylinder would. Still, it's much nicer to not have to worry about constantly re-adjusting the cylinders. If you are doing grading work with the tractor, there are plenty of other things to pay attention to rather than worrying about whether your cylinders have moved without your permission. ;)

Get the one with the POCV (Pilot Operated Check Valve) from CCM and you will have no regrets. Your tractors (I saw your other post also) do not have check valve "built in"

Perhaps you could enlighten us dummies? I'm a bit new to this tractor thing. I did a search on google for "CCM" but did not get anything useful.

Thanks!

CCM is Carter & Carter Machinery:
Carter and Carter Machinery, Hay Equipment Headquarters

The cylinders can be seen HERE.

The "box" attached to the cylinder is the POCV, it basically keeps the cylinder from drifting-even if a hose blows! This has been discussed here for years. Regular cylinders can drift due to poor seals in the cylinder itself, or from leakage in the remote that they are hooked to.

I understand. Thanks for the quick reply.

Thank you all for the great advice---

I put a post into "Build it yourself" regarding the possibility of making check valves with quick attaches and just snapping into each line rather than buying cylinders with check valves built in. That way I could have one set of those and mulitple cylinders --cat one and two--for different tractors.

thanks
