Hydraulic hose question

Read through the thread over on the Safety forum. Scary stuff. Since the my tractor is new to me, I decided to check the hoses on the plow attachment. I discovered this

Comments? Is this a "do not use/replace" case?

This is not near a crimp or rigid connection so you can determine what condition its in and just take care of it and be safe. If the wire braid is not frayed or rusted, clean it well with a toothbrush and alcohol. Then put a flexible sealer glue over it to seal out contaminants and a layer of tape over it after it cures. Then slip a piece of the nylon mesh tubing over it and ziptye.

However, if there are broken wires or any significant rust replace it.

Great, thanks. Clarification on flexible sealer glue - would something like Permatex gasket stuff work?

I think the gasket stuff is a silicone. They can do well, but usually are not very durable to surface disturbance - hence tape over it... but then few tapes will adhere to silicone rubber. You see the problem. Instead, I would go with a flexible epoxy or a urethane rubber. Available from: McMaster-Carr
I recommend the job size packets shown at page bottom; #s 7538a31 and 7493a35. The epoxy is described on the packet as "flexible very high peel strength epoxy". It takes overnite to cure and forms a more reliable bond and should easily take the small amount of flex inherent in hose use. The urethane is much more flexible [still tuf] and sets pretty quickly. The color matches youre hose too! -- but left open to the weather would show notable deterioration in a year.
You get 10 packets for the price. The epoxy stores better. Even a year or so from now the unused packets will be good.
If you use them do the patch in a "dry" environment because the exposed surface can pick up moisture during the cure. A dewed on patch made in the evening would not be as nice as yould like.
