For those of us that actually remember having to take a typing class in school.. the word per minute count could also be done by character content.. not individual words.. etc. At least that's how our instructor did it.

Anyone else use the old original selectric's?

You had the old selectric electric?
A step up from the stone age Underwood lever returns and individual keys I learned on.
I think mine had Barney Rubble's initials on it.

I actually own a manual carriage return typwriter.. it's a bit of an antique.. but works.

And yes.. We used the selectric electric type's in school.. individual key arms.... At a job I used to work they had a selectric II with the uni-ball head..
