Pete, you just have to do a little experimenting and go with what works best, but I'll have to say it sounds as if you're going opposite of what I do. When using the loader, I'm more apt to be at 1700-2200 rpm, but when mowing I run it at PTO speed which is about 2540 rpm because that's what the mower was designed to run at (supposedly) and do the best job. Of course, it would work at lower rpm, but maybe not as smooth and clean a cut. But whatever works is the way to go.

I figured that having the rpm up hight when i use the hydraulic pump the most, which is when i clear snow and use the bucket constantly, would help the pump itself out by keeping it going full blast. Am i wrong?
As far as using the mower, you'r right....acording to the manual, the rpm should be higher than what keep it at. My lawn is quite lumpy and i can't drive as fast as the tractor is capaple of without a good dose of whiplash, so i figured no harm done by lower rpm.
