John:

I happened to stop into my JD dealer today. I got to talking to my favorite salesman about lawn tractors/garden tractors. He said they had a machine for around $2500, around 17.5 HP and 38" cut. Don't hold me on this.

I asked about the Home Depot models and he said the ones they sold at the JD dealerships were just better built and more of a heavy duty unit. They do not sell the same models as HD. The Box Store (HD) models were mostly for the home owner. This JD dealer will NOT service the HD sold models. He said that JD just dropped the fact on the dealers that they were selling lower end models at HD and the dealers had no say about it. His reasoning for not servicing the HD models is that they have a limited service facility for their own customes and don't want to make their customers wait for service while working on HD's customers models.

He also said he heard that JD was working out some kind of deal with HD customers for a service/repair facility.

I asked about engine life and he said JD used the Kawasaki industrial engines as their prime mover in their expensive stuff as well as Briggs and Kohler in the units they sell at the dealership. He did say the Kawasaki were the best of Briggs, Kohler or Kawasaki. He did admit, however, that with proper maintenance, you'd probably wear out the rest of the machine before any of the engines croaked.

For whatever this worth.

By the way, I wasn't trying to steer you to a Craftsman, or away for that matter, you mentioned the Husky and they were about the same for seemingly more money. I don't own one, remember so don't have any brand loyalty.

If you were happy with your Honda walk behind, how about a qualtity self propelled Honda walk behind again? A lot cheaper and you get some exercise. You've got the "big tractor" for any real work.

Good luck.

Joe , again , thanks for the input .
Yep, the Honda was (and is ) a great machine .
But If I'm going to do yard work , I'll do it sitting down /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Can't fault you for that.

Not yet ! But the craftsman 5000 looks pretty good to me . Vey nice looking machine from a build/price perspective . The mower deck seems very well built .
Had to Co-sign for a loan for my Son in Law . His car died .
So it might have to be put off until spring . At least I won't need to be mowing again this year /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Buzst:

I'd have to disagree with you on the point of Electrolux owning most of the companies that make outdoor lawn products.

MTD, not electrolux owns them. MTD, Brookpark, Ohio makes lawn care products for Sears, TSC, Yard man, Troybuilt and more.

Hmm,

My dad just bought a L110 from a John Deere Dealer - $1800. 17.5 HP, 42" cut. Looks like the Same machine that HD sells. Dealer said it was the same machine. The LT / LX seriers were a bunch more money...

From Deere's web site - Buy it at your local Deere dealer or HD.

Deere 100 Series

The policy of not selling the same models as HD and not servicing the HD models may only be a local (Central Coast of California) policy. The dealer seemed pretty torqued out of shape about what John Deere did by allowing HD to sell the JD product. There are two JD dealers about 70 miles apart and I live about half way between them. Doesn't really matter which I go to since they are both owned by the same people. When in there, I did not see any of the models on the floof that I see at HD, i.e. L 110 or L 120.

My local dealer sells them. He really likes the idea, and has made a lot of money because of the deal.
If you saw a cheap JD at HD, would you not be curious what your local JD dealer could do.
He said most people did not know you could buy a JD for that price and made the trip to the dealer.

I believe Electrolux does manufacture some models for Sears such as the DYT 4000, can't say exactly which other ones without rubbing and touching. Our local Sears even sells Husqvarna mowers, but not seen the high end XP models there. Looks like an orange copy of some 2000 series models.

( dieselsmoke1, do you ever let them go out to play? )

Last weekend they were both out for playtime together. Bride mowing, me bush hogging. Bride met me at the edge of the yard, wants to TRADE!!!

/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gifWell.......OK.........I guess so............but stay away from all trees, rocks, ditches, and anything else that is not "grass".

She did fine. I did a pretty poor job of mowing cause I was too busy watching her /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I went to buy the DYT4000 this spring ,but when i popped the hood on the DLT3000, i knew that was what i wanted....just something about a Honda motor.

I know what you mean. I looked at it real hard till the Bride said "I like this one", and to be honest, the Tim Taylor syndrome set in on me. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
