Hi All,

I have a Craftsman push mower with the engine mentioned above. I'm trying to adjust the valve lash, but when I look at various videos, they all show a set screw and nut to adjust, but the mower I have does not have the set screws. Anyone else find this with their engines? Thanks for any help!

Set screw should be in the end of the hex end. Could possibly by torx head set screw.

picture of the rocker arms would help if this isn't correct.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for your reply. Attached is a picture. There are no set screws; only a threaded rod with nuts attached. Not sure what to make of this, I've never seen one without them. I looked at the parts images and there is no mention of these set screws. I'm assuming you adjust by just turning the nuts in and out on the shaft? Dome scratcher!

I have come across that setup. Seem to remember they are a sort of friction fit lock nut. You turn the nut to set the clearance, but have to watch the studs because when you try to increase the gap can unscrew the stud from the head.

Yup, what you're saying makes sense. I was able to adjust the gap using these nuts, but still no compression. I removed the head and ordered a new head gasket. I guess we'll see once I get that replaced. Thanks for the link to the adjuster. I don't believe the valve cover has ever been removed so it may have come from the factory this way. Appreciate the info!
