I guess it might be 10 years or so back, two men were shot in my county before dawn. In both cases, the men were walking before sunrise to a hunting spot and they were shot by other "hunters." One man was killed and the other was lucky to survive. Seems like a few years ago there was a similar shooting up in Ashville.
Unfortunately these crimes are often NOT felonies and the criminals are given very light sentences while keeping their ability to own firearms. If my memory is working correctly, in two of these three incidents, the shooter was a young man or teenager. The press, as always seems to be the case, were more concerned with the shooters compared to the people they shot. It is a shame that a young man made a mistake that will follow him for the rest of his life but the person that was shot suffered far more.
There was a woman killed back in the early 90's in what was then a sorta small town. She was in her own backyard gardening during hunting season. She was wearing white gloves and some idiot shot her in the daytime. He was slapped on the wrist.
Before I moved to NC, I had an uncle that got the NC state wildlife magazine. I was reading one issue which was on hunting accidents and there was an incident were two people riding on a motorcycle were killed by a "hunter." They were on a road and wearing white helmets. The "hunter" shot the moving white "flag" which caused the motorcycle to crash and both people died. This was back in the 80's.
The penalties for these incidents should be felonies in many/most/all cases.
Later,
Dan
