Hunting accidents

Or drunk? When I was a kid back in the 50s our neighbor's dapple gray Welsh pony was shot dead, in his paddock next to the barn, by a drunk deer hunter. City idiot who only came to the woods for deer season and probably would have missed if he'd actually been aiming. I know he got caught but can't remember what the consequences were, I was too busy being sad for my pony friend.

In Kentucky some years back, a "hunter"(?!!!) brought in a mule to the game check station to be tagged! No, not a mule deer, a mule!

I hunt my own land and I'm still wary given the number of people who also hunt in my area. I usually wear orange cause you never know who might be there uninvited.

This is another example of why high fince hunting preserves are becoming more popular. The hunters know who are out there in the woods with them and can feel safer that not just anybody is out there letting lead fly.

I guess it might be 10 years or so back, two men were shot in my county before dawn. In both cases, the men were walking before sunrise to a hunting spot and they were shot by other "hunters." One man was killed and the other was lucky to survive. Seems like a few years ago there was a similar shooting up in Ashville.

Unfortunately these crimes are often NOT felonies and the criminals are given very light sentences while keeping their ability to own firearms. If my memory is working correctly, in two of these three incidents, the shooter was a young man or teenager. The press, as always seems to be the case, were more concerned with the shooters compared to the people they shot. It is a shame that a young man made a mistake that will follow him for the rest of his life but the person that was shot suffered far more.

There was a woman killed back in the early 90's in what was then a sorta small town. She was in her own backyard gardening during hunting season. She was wearing white gloves and some idiot shot her in the daytime. He was slapped on the wrist.

Before I moved to NC, I had an uncle that got the NC state wildlife magazine. I was reading one issue which was on hunting accidents and there was an incident were two people riding on a motorcycle were killed by a "hunter." They were on a road and wearing white helmets. The "hunter" shot the moving white "flag" which caused the motorcycle to crash and both people died. This was back in the 80's.

The penalties for these incidents should be felonies in many/most/all cases.

Later,
Dan

Duck hunter shot while being "scoped."

From:
Stanwood duck hunter likely shot from shore | HeraldNet.com - Local news

Detectives have recovered bullet fragments, supporting a theory that someone from shore used a rifle to shoot a Stanwood duck hunter Jan. 1.The man was hit in the leg while he and his brother were in a 14-foot aluminum boat about 500 yards from land. The men reported that they were carrying 12-gauge shotguns.
...
The detective was seeking the identity of a person who posted a comment Jan. 3 under the newspaper’s online story about the New Year’s Day shooting.
...
Someone had written that the shooting “was an accident, he wasn’t intending to fire he was looking through the scope, fired by accident.”

My boss's lab stepped on the trigger of his shotgun while he was dove hunting, causing it to send some 7 1/2 shot straight into his left thigh. I bet that felt nice.

Two deaths here in this county I remember hunting were suspicious. One a guy a couple were younger than me in school shot and killed his step dad hunting. One report claimed accident the another came out saying the man's shirt had powder marks . And was angled down, then the medical examiner changed again saying it was from afar. Another was years later two high school students went hunting after a falling out over a girl. Boy friend of girl accidentally shot and killed other guy. I'd be danged if I'd go hunting with the guy whose girl friend I was messing with. Both cases ruled as accidents.

Over the years of hunting in Colorado, I have seen horses shot out from under riders by hunters, even with all kinds of orange florescent flagging tied to the horse. Around the 3rd year of going up there, somewhere in 81 or 82 We where stopped at treeline by several Game wardens, apparently some Dumb A, shot at a bull elk that was standing at the top crest of a hill, the bullet missed and killed an off duty state trooper that was hunting with his son over 1 mile away. Property lines wont stop bullets.

Texas has it issues as well, especially with the number of hunters, even though 90% of our land is private.

Had a Off duty Game Warden shot out of a tree stand 3 weeks ago in East Texas!?? a tree stand fellas!!??? Last I heard he was flown to Dallas and is recovering.
