Moved a heck of a lot of snow with Clementine yesterday, then parked her outside since I needed the garage bay for car repairs, etc. Got up this morning and fired up the diesel, intending to give her a good long warmup. Heard a POP and UDT fluid was just gushing from underneath! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Shut her down immediately. Looks like the seal on the hydraulic filter blew out. Whew! Easy fix, but gotta take tomorrow off to drive to the city and pick up a new filter and Super UDT fluid. As luck would have it, snow and slush is forecast for tonight!

Was it a Kubota filter? How long has it been on the tractor and was it installed tight?

Filter check and change

The filter was coming up on one year in place. I visually check the filters for leaks, but don't "retighten" them as part of my daily checks. Lost enough fluid in less than thirty seconds that the fluid level doesn't even show on the sight glass!

So here's a question for you guys. My dealer suggests changing all filters every 100 hours, except for the oil filter which gets changed every 50 hours along with the oil. What do the rest of you do?

Re: Filter check and change

hydro and HST filters - every 200 hours, along with 10 gallons of Super UDT. Oil filter - every 50, along with 8 quarts of 15w40. Fuel filter - every 100 hrs.

Last time I changed the hydro and HST filters I cut them open to see how much crap was inside - not much, a few dozen specks/flakes between the 2 filters.

How the heck do you change the filters without losing all your hydraulic fluid? Tip the tractor up on its side?

I was wondering that myself...and have a nice spot on the side of the pond where the angle might be about right! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Pete,

I feel for you! The same thing happened to me last year. It really wasn't what I wanted to see on a fine Saturday Morning. But, stuff occurs.

Kubmech let me know last year that the HST filter was updated to correct just this problem. Your dealer may have sold you a down rev filter (?).

New PN TA240-59900

Also, I went with Amsoil at 100 hours this fall in expectation of a cold winter. Have you thought about that versus the SUDT?
(If you are FAST you can swap filters with only about 1 gallon of fluid loss.)

Sorry to read about the down time, but if it had to happen thank goodness it was near your home instead of deep in the woods or -0 w/alot of snow.
Rain here all night and now starting to snow..crazy winter compare to last year.

Re: Filter check and change

My rule of thumb..if it say to change every 100hours I change everything 20 hours before hand.
I don't like just changing a filter,I change the filter and fluid on both oil & hyd, sure its kinda wasting $$$ but I look at this way..its good insurance.

John -- Thanks for the info about the filters. I'll check it out...but later. In this weather I only want to crawl around in the snow under the beast once! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Amsoil makes UDT? I might just look into that. Thanks again.
