Well, I guess I put my HST filter on a bit too tight on my last change because it is stuck on there real good.

I have a metal band type filter wrench and I could not budge it no way in either direction. I even put a small piece of pipe on the handle and it started to bend the handle. This is not a cheap filter wrench either.:mur:
I have a band type that I can use with a 1/2 drive but am a little scared to be putting that much torque on the filter housing.:confused3:

Any tricks or tips?
My next step will be to get one of the filter wrenches with the jaws that lock into the notches on the filter base I guess.

Or take a shot at it?

Poke a good size screw driver straight through it and spin it off
abit messy but but it usually gets the stubborn one's off.

yeah, this is where those cup filters tools, that fit on your 3/8 drive are nice. Problem is having a drawer full of those cups, and dang it, you still run into filters, supposedly the exact same number and everything as before, but the makers change the diameter just a whisker different and the cup either slips or won't fit. I also like the three fingered jaw type as well. The guys at the auto dealerships swear by them.

Do you have enough room for pipe wrench.

If you end up using Channel Locks or pipe wrench, try to grip the filter down low, at the base. Gripping it high up is basically twisting on a very thin tin can and it distorts easily. Let us know how it comes out. Best hopes for ya.

Try one of those chain-type pipe wrenches. They can really apply the torque.

chain pipe wrench

I used one on the L48's transmission filter which is metal-to-metal mounted (not like the rubber O-rings on the HST filters). What finally had to be done was a come-along was hitched to the handle and the other end on the axle. That filter finally came loose. It was ugly but it was off. Good luck to you.

next time make sure you lube the rubber first hand tight than a 1/4 turn after that.

I second tommu56 solution. It is one I have used many times. Why go out and spend a lot of money on a new, improved filter wrench and waste all that time driving there? You already have a filter wrench. It just won't do this specific filter.
Now, get that large screwdrive and hammer!

yea-- the bigger the hammer the easier the fix right?

Had this happen on my 50 hour maint--
the hydro filter was so tight the socket style just spun...
the metal grip one bent and then I had an idea..

I had some thin rubber gasket material..
and then I used a slightly bigger socket type...
put that in the socket and ashamedly used the ratchet to tap it on..

worked like a charm..

I dunno... sometimes ya just got to think like MacGyver!

Thanks guy's
By the sounds of it I should not be to concerned about over torquing the filter housing so I think I will try one of those channel lock types and come on to it with a vengeance.
It will have to wait until I get back from Cuba so I will have several cold ones for all that suggested approaches or provided moral support.:licking:
Thanks.....

I tried putting a paper towel around the filter as a shim and the "just a little too loose" wrench worked.

A tip I learned many years ago on removing screw on filters is to apply a continuous pressure on whatever you're using to unscrew it with.

Mine came tight from the dealer. Channel locked it and bend the heck out of the filter but it came out...eventually...but hey, it's not like I was thinking about re-using it anyways...

One of these - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices will usually work for me.

If not, this Channellock 215 - 15 inch Oil Filter Plier @ Channellock is the next step up, and if I can't get it off with that,

this channellock 480 - 20.25 inch BigAZZョ Tongue and Groove Plier @ Channellock has never failed me, although by the time I work up to that one, the filter is usually a mangled mess.
Large Channel-Locks work great on filters. I have used them for years. Just need enough room to get large jaws around filter. I recently purchased the oil filter type. Works as well as the Channel-Locks and easier to get around filter.

I also have had some filters stuck pretty badly, and also agree a large pair of channel locks is the ticket. I had a friend who tore a filter apart so badly, he had to take a hammer and chisel and drive the base of the filter around in a circle. He had demolished the filter so badly nothing was left except the part stuck in the engine block.

If you completely destroy the filter, many of the nipples they screw onto I have seen have a square hole which fits a 3/8" socket drive extension.

I would put a short extension on a breaker bar and take out the nipple before I used a chisel. A lot less can go wrong.
