Like other ground contact implements, weight is the key factor determining cutting/penetrating capability.
The weight of Disc Harrows is in the pans. So Disc Harrow weight escalates rapidly with increasing diameter pans.
In theory a Three Point Hitch mounted Tandem Disc Harrow can penetrate half the pan diameter, less half the diameter of the reinforcing pan hub.
So a Three Point Hitch mounted Tandem Disc Harrow with 20" diameter pans in theory can penetrate about 7" deep, assuming a reinforcing hub diameter of 6".
