This is a picture of my 6' Howse Rotary Cutter. It is the light duty cutter from Howse with a 50 hp gearbox. I should have taken the picture before I cut 30 acres with it!

Nah, if we want the pristine pics, we can go to the manufacturer's website. I enjoy seeing 'em working, myself.
So, Clemson..how about filling out the profile (use the control panel link) so we know about your tractor, location, etc.?

Hey, Clemson! I have the 5' version of the same cutter.

Before I took mine out for any cutting, I added the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/forumfiles/5-33483-ChainGuards.jpg>chain guards</A> ($195). Do you plan to do something similar, or are you able to stay far, far away from cars, houses and living creatures?

I would love to have the chain guards. I think that they are a most worthwhile investment. Unfortunately, I need a plow more than chain guards, so they will have to wait. The only livestock in the pasture right now head south when I start mowing, so I am the only likely target for debris. I did manage to put a few dings in my legs while working over the blackberry bushes.

I was able to handle stuff up through an inch in diameter with no problems, and I have yet to shear a shear bolt, which is a good thing because I am not sure what size they are! My only gripe with the Howse mower is that the manual is really cheezy.

I have the very same manual, Clemson, and if you think that one is, uh... sub-par, you should see the one I got for their box scraper. It's a truly content-free publication. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I also have a 6' Howse that I was considering adding chains to. I think I will go to Home Depot and buy some chain, round bar stock, some eye bolts, and make it myself.

I have considered getting some conveyor belt material and cutting a strip 8" x the length of the cutter. I think I could bolt that on instead of chains. Right now, however, I will live with the shrapnel.

Clemson, I tried the conveyor belt material on two different brush hogs; both a Bush Hog and a Howse. Hope you have better luck than I did; neither one lasted more than a day or two.

I used angle iron, chain, and my little welder and made my own.

If you're only cutting "grassy-light" material... Hummmm... it may last a few weeks or so...

As tough as that stuff looks and feels... the rough-heavy stuff you'll end up cutting is tougher... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

You may want to consider just getting a "front" curtain chain to somewhat protect the tractor operator... if you're away from the general population and no OSHA rules to adhere to...

Clemson,

Thanks for the pics. I work about 8 miles from the Howse factory and I have owned a few pieces of their eqipment over the years.

Howse had some pretty serious quality problems at one time but I've been told they are doing much better. I know their facilities are much nicer and more modern than they used to be. I have a friend whose son works there and he told me that Howse recently got a pretty large contract for some equipment for John Deere - not sure if it was cutters or what.

I was out there on Monday and bought a 6' heavy duty cutter on their "seconds yard". They have some equipment that was returned and reworked, some has just been sitting around and looks bad (Howse paint jobs are terrible - if something sits out in the weather for two months, it looks like it is two years old). They even had one of their trucks that turned over a while back and scattered new equipment over about two acres. The salvageable pieces were sold at pretty low prices.

Anyway the 6' that I bought was just too good a bargain to pass up and had a full warranty so I hope it will be ok. I'm going to pick it up this afternoon.

John, I didn't know that I could buy just the front curtain as an option. That would get me exactly what I need. I don't have to worry about anyone else but me in the places where I work.

You can order the front 6' chains and mounting hardware for your Howse for $73. + shipping to your door. (wt is about 46 lbs. for the front chain kit)

Good luck...

Thanks, John. I have a call in to my dealer to check his price and availability. Are there mail-order sources that you are aware of?

In this case, I would order direct from the factory parts section, because of the shipping weight involved...

Ask to order 1/2 chain kit (front or rear specify) for your model/size Howse rotary cutter.

I have the same cutter......pull it with my 8n. It's been awesome......had one problem with a bolt on the gearbox breaking, but that's all. I've cut some serious stuff with that cutter prior to getting my new tractor and the FEL.....cleanup is much easier now <g>

I'm in the market for a new 10 foot cutter for my NH TN70........looking at bush hog and rhino.

BTW, you got a manual with yours????? I don't remember getting one ....bought it from a guy new though, just up the road, who sells implements....guess he forgot to give me the manual.

I'm a computer guy....we don't read manuals anyway <smile>.

I got a manual, Dave, such as it is. Let me know if you want me to copy something out of it and mail to you.
