Why bother?

It's certainly not for the aesthetic. Most days, you would think I was mowing dust, not grass, so it's to keep some of the dirt out of the innards.

Also because the hood helps to reduce the noise level. I know when I have had the hood off my mower for repair it is significantly louder.
