I agree cut as low as you can go than fill it in w/coarse crush stone, also remove any other trees in question.

I agree with Egon.
Your TC40 will move this tree with ease.
I would place your FEL under the tree to lift slightly then I would use a chainsaw
to cut above the stump next you could move the tree in direction that easy to tend to (makes great firewood) then I would use the FEL on the stump it looks to be rotted away you shouldn't have any trouble with it --you could always use your backhoe--I have the same one as you..if you have a toothbar it makes life a lot easier--I now use the toothbar more than the backhoe for your type of situation.
here's a picture: this is how I like to take trees out these days

Dusty and Egon gave you the advice I'd follow. Keep it simple and not worry about it. There's no good advantage to digging out what's left in the ground or disturbing the gravel. Fill the hole with good base and finish it off and you'll forget that tree was ever there.

I wouldn't dig out the stump, but cover it over.

I agree 100%. Plenty of old stumps underlying our roads and you'd never know it. Break down the stump as much as possible and build up over it and forget about it. It will only add stability to the road and prevent a whole bunch of work on your part.

Here is the fix - I cut the tree, then pushed the stump over the hill with the loader. I could only find one attached root and sawed it. I did manage to get my saw wedged between the trunk and a smaller tree that had fallen. I ended up spending as much time getting the saw free as I spent on the rest of the job.

I used the TC40DA to haul a bucket full of good clay base, then drove back and forth to pack it down. Those R4s did a nice job. Should get a new top coat of gravel this week.

I stopped counting at 65 rings on the tree. My guess it was close to a 100 years old. The next task is to figure out how to get the firewood up the hillside.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Quick simple and to the point, good idea. Just a word of caution if you had not build the road so close to the tree, It (tree) would probably still be standing.

My late father-in-law built the drive in the late 50s. So a couple of the trees have grown into the road. I've got a couple of more to deal with. I did hate to see it go.

Move the house closer to the paved road?:)
LOL thats funny, Yea don't go nuts push away what want to move. I would use a bucket of aggregate and grade as usual. If it sinks later just treat as needed like the rest of the road

You may want to get one of these ($280), it will save your back.
